Here is what Luke Grime, the actor who plays Kayce Dutton on “Yellowstone”, considers the most difficult thing about his character.

Kayce Dutton is a character that has stayed very consistent throughout the “Yellowstone” series. He is loyal, compassionate, a hard worker, brave, and wants to feel needed, whether that be on the ranch, as the Livestock Commissioner, potentially as Governor, or just as simple as driving down the road. If Kayce sees someone in need, he can never just look the other way and continue on with his journey. He will stop at nothing to help. We call this his savior complex.

Furthermore, Kayce Dutton will never let anyone in fully. After his service in the military and the evil he has seen throughout the world, he has become calloused and disheartened. Fans are always left guessing what our beloved “tortured” cowboy is thinking because he doesn’t give away an inch.

Prior to the start of “Yellowstone” season three, Luke Grimes and Kelsey Asbille, the actress who played Monica Long, sat down with Park City Television to discuss their complex characters.

“Yeah, I guess the difficulty is that, you know, I love Kayce,” says Grimes. “I think it’s the greatest character I’ve ever had the opportunity to play, and just doing him justice because I do think he’s such an awesome person. You know, there’s a lot of halfsies. He’s trying to be a really good father, a really good husband. He also was a veteran and all these different things, so you know, the difficulties, yeah, doing him justice, because I love him.”

Kayce Dutton ‘Yellowstone’ Season Three

We love him as well.

In fact, loyal “Yellowstone” fans are on the edge of their seat to find out what happens to Kayce Dutton in season four. The last we saw of him, he was on a phone call with his wife, Monica. Kayce was sharing his thoughts on the proposal he had just received to run for Governor of Montana after Governor Perry’s term was up. And while Monica is apprehensive, she can hear the excitement in her husband’s voice.

However, at the same time, on the other side of Kayce Dutton’s office door, he begins to hear gunshots fired throughout the building. Sensing the immediate danger, Kayce flips his massive wood desk to use as protection from the armed gunmen that come bursting through his door.

The scene cuts to Monica, who is on the phone still, screaming Kayce’s name. All she hears back in response are gunshots.

Does Kayce Dutton survive? Being a Navy SEAL, he has extensive military training. Shouldn’t that come in handy when backed into a corner, fighting for your life? But it’s him against countless enemies. Is Kayce Dutton outnumbered? Will the desk protect him? Will he survive the attack? Who is responsible for wanting to take out three Dutton family members?

The questions are endless. Our only hope is that “Yellowstone” season four will reveal the answers soon.
