Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley) is the black sheep of the family on “Yellowstone.” He also happens to be adopted, a fact that he only discovered upon becoming Montana’s attorney general.
Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) has a penchant for punching all of Jamie’s buttons as hard as she can. So fans are wondering why hasn’t she gone after Jamie for being adopted? Could it be because she doesn’t know?
And for that matter, what about Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes)? Is he aware of Jamie’s parentage?
‘Yellowstone’ Fans Debate What Jamie’s Siblings Know
In a new thread on Reddit, one “Yellowstone” fan kicked off the discussion by wondering what Beth and Kayce know. The fan pointed out that we didn’t see any scenes showing Jamie’s siblings finding out he was adopted.
“This is something that I assumed would be made crystal clear early in S4 but it seems not to have been (yes, I know that there was that little exchange between Kayce and Jamie in Season 3 that alluded to it),” the fan posted. “I still would have appreciated a bit more of an insight as to how this reveal transpired. I also feel like Beth would have taunted him with this information in that scene in his office in the S4 premiere, so I’m back to ‘unsure.’”
Given what we know about Beth, it does seem unlikely that Jamie’s adoption would have stayed a secret, least of all from him, if she’d found out. And in the episodes since Jamie himself learned of his adoption, we haven’t seen Beth taunting him about it at all.
The latter fact alone was enough for other fans to put Beth firmly in the “doesn’t know” column. After all, she uses every bit of ammo she can find against Jamie.
“I don’t think that she knows,” another fan argued. “It would be out of character for her to not shove that in his face.”
Does Kayce Know More Than Beth?
As for Kayce, fans seemed to think that’s a different matter. We did catch one scene in which Jamie asked if he could still call Kayce ‘brother,’ and Kayce replied, “For the rest of your life, you’d better never call me anything else.” But did Jamie ask that because Kayce knew he was adopted, or because of recent events that had left Jamie estranged from the family?
“I definitely think Kayce knows,” another fan posted. “That office exchange makes no sense whatsoever if not.”
“Kayce definitely knows,” yet another fan chimed in. “They had an exchange last season where Jamie asked what do I call you and kayce said you still call me brother.”
If Kayce doesn’t already know, he may soon find out. It looks like relations between Jamie and the rest of his adoptive family will soon be reaching a boiling point. And how much sway will Jamie’s biological father, Garrett Randall (Will Patton), have over his actions going forward?
There’s only one way to find out. New episodes of “Yellowstone” air Sundays, exclusively on the Paramount Network.
