The hit Paramount Network series “Yellowstone” is very much a character-driven drama that thrives on the development of its stars.

Within the “Yellowstone” universe, there is no character as divisive as Jamie Dutton is. It’s hard to fault Jamie for bitterness toward his family — powerful Montana cattle ranchers, the Duttons. Through three seasons, Jamie Dutton has truly been put through the wringer and is likely to get more of the same in season four.

When we first meet Jamie in season one, he is an ambitious and rising star in the Montana political scene. He has his eyes set on a run at the state’s Attorney General position and seems destined to take it. This puts him at odds with his father, Dutton Family patriarch John Dutton. It’s the first of many hardships that Jamie will face through three seasons. We’ve seen him kill a journalist, become suicidal, return to “Yellowstone” as a ranch hand and get back on his feet once more. That is a heck of a ride for three seasons.

Despite all that Jamie Dutton has been through, the worst was saved for the third season. Jamie discovers that he was adopted by the Dutton family as an infant. He tracks down and meets his biological father, Garrett Randall, who encourages his son to take matters into his own hands. As season four approaches, Jamie is at crosswords with a couple of paths he could take. “Yellowstone” fans participating in a recent Reddit thread ask if Jamie is right to be as upset as he is.

“I really don’t understand why he is so mad about being adopted,” the fan says. “Shouldn’t he be so grateful? Is it because he’s been lied to for so many years? Even then, I don’t understand his rage.”

Fair questions.

‘Yellowstone’ Fans Question Jamie Dutton’s Contempt For Family

Numerous fans chime in on the thread with a wide range of thoughts and opinions. These thoughts and opinions are pretty evenly split among the “Yellowstone” faithful.

“I don’t think he’s mad, I think he’s incredibly, incredibly hurt,” another Redditor writes. “Who wouldn’t be? Living 40 years thinking you’re someone that you aren’t? To realize such a huge secret was kept from you? To realize you don’t quite fit in with your family – by looks, temperament, and intellect – but can’t figure out why not.”

Another “Yellowstone” watcher places the blame for Jamie’s contempt on John Dutton

“John had a perfect weapon formed with Jamie until he found out, the fan writes. “He raised a confused young man to always need to seek the approval of his father. John is not a flawed man or a good man, he is an abuser.”

What will season four have in store for Jamie Dutton. When we will find out when “Yellowstone” returns on November 7.
