Watch a few cast interviews, and you’ll find no shortage of praise for Yellowstone from its actors, crew, or anyone, really. Much of this hinges on the experience the modern Western provides for those involved. Which directly results in the quality of the end result for audiences. In short: it’s as much a damn good time to make Yellowstone as it is to watch it.
In this featurette on the younger days of John Dutton, actor Josh Lucas delves into much of what turned his version of JD into Kevin Costner’s hardened, grizzly patriarch. But he doesn’t stop there. In fact, Lucas is absolutely taken with the show – and feels it has far more to offer its American audience than simple entertainment.
“It’s about what’s happening in particular parts of America,” the Yellowstone actor says. Areas that, “like the show talks about, are not necessarily in the media glare,” he pinpoints.
“So it’s a world that I think, at its core, is the essence of how and why America is what it is. These days, in particular. And what it always has been… From the beginning.”

At the same time, however, Lucas knows the show has “all the things that makes the idea of entertainment so good!” Why not enjoy the best of both worlds?
Josh Lucas on the Genius of ‘Yellowstone’
This “best of both worlds” boils down to one man, too. A man that Josh Lucas is an unabashed fan of – as are all those who love Yellowstone.
“There are elements of it that I think are unique in the land of what I think Taylor is creating,” Lucas says of Yellowstone‘s pantheon. He speaks, of course, of the show’s mastermind, co-creator, lead writer, and sometimes director & actor Taylor Sheridan.
Of Sheridan’s work, Josh Lucas has nothing but high praise. In his eyes, Yellowstone is nothing short of “extraordinary visceral, violent, thriving storytelling.” We’re hard-pressed to agree. With zero pressing, actually. Don’t have to twist an Outsider’s arm to have them tell you how phenomenal a show Yellowstone is.
But such breakneck storytelling is far from all Sheridan’s television masterstroke has to offer. “At the same time there’s sort of an amazing nuance of social commentary,” Lucas continues, alluding to his comments above.
And if given the chance, Josh Lucas would return to the role of John Dutton in a heartbeat.
“There’s even been some talk of doing whole flashback episodes,” he told Collider earlier in July. “That is my hope. I don’t know if or when that’ll happen, but I’m open to it, that’s for sure . . . It’s one of the most beautiful shows that I’ve ever been a part of, in terms of the landscapes.”
