Mirror, mirror on the wall. Who’s the worst Yellowstone villain of them all? Between John Dutton, Dan Jenkins, Thomas Rainwater, we think we found a winner.

Throughout Yellowstone, John Dutton and the rest of his family are always in hot water with the law, the neighbors, or people threatening his livelihood. For generations, the Duttons have ruled the Montana valley, and John will not let anyone stand in his way of carrying on that tradition.

In the three seasons of Yellowstone already released, we have seen villains come and go, and when we say go, they die. Disappear from the Earth, never to be seen again.

Beginning in the first season, we met all our contenders for the biggest villain, John Dutton, Dan Jenkins, and Thomas Rainwater.

‘Yellowstone’ Season 1 Villians

Here is how we see it. Every one of these men are doing sketchy and illegal things out in Montana. It all depends on why they are doing these things.

Our pick for the worst Yellowstone villain out of the three is Dan Jenkins. He has the worst motive behind his plan for expansion, which is to get more money in his pocket. Jenkins is only worried about growing the town and all for his own profit. Regardless of his intentions, he is now dead and didn’t live to see the end of Yellowstone season three.

John Dutton and Thomas Rainwater both did, however.

Now we are torn. We love John Dutton. He is the star of the show. Sure he does questionable things and acts as if he is above the law, but he just wants to keep his land. The poor man wants to live out his days on the Yellowstone ranch and not be disturbed. Yet, he is faced time and time again with battle from those looking to take away his massive property and the property of ranchers like him.

Furthermore, Thomas Rainwater acts in the best interest of the reservation. We really wouldn’t consider him a bad guy. Rainwater just wants his people to have the land they did before anyone was here to take it from them. Someday he hopes to take the Yellowstone from John Dutton, but not for his own benefit. He would give it back to the people.

Reddit’s Hot Takes

However, fans on Reddit feel differently. Maybe due to the fact that they have only seen the first season, but we do not agree entirely with them.

“I’ve been surprised by John Dutton,” wrote BobbyDagen. “I expected Kevin Costner to have a more heroic character in this because of his history of characters. I do wonder if we are meant to sympathize with John more because I consider him to be the most evil person in the show. He’s greenlighting people for murder, assaulting people, and intimidating people to keep himself in power. He branded his own son and has cowboys on his ranch that are branded and can’t leave. If they do, he has them killed. He claims he is doing this all for his family, but it seems like he is only doing it for his own ego. He’s a f–king monster, in my opinion.”

They continue, touching on their thoughts of Yellowstone’s Thomas Rainwater and Dan Jenkins.

“Jenkins and Rainwater aren’t altruistic either, but sh-t, they don’t seem even half as evil as John does. It almost got to the point where I was partially rooting for them (or at least Rainwater) by the end.”

However, if you open up the villain pool to everyone we’ve seen thus far, we personally would vote for the Beck Brothers or whoever carried out the attacks on Beth, Kayce, and John Dutton. We feel as though that may be Market Equities, but that hasn’t been confirmed yet. Whoever is behind it, they are evil.

Yellowstone season four is only a month away! Are you as excited as us?
