On the ever popular television series “Yellowstone,” Luke Grimes plays the often troubled Kayce Dutton.

Kayce Dutton is the son of Dutton family patriarch John Dutton, played brilliantly by Kevin Costner. Kayce is joined in the Dutton family by his brother Jamie and sister Beth. He is married to Monica Long and serves as a horseman and ranch hand on the titular Yellowstone Ranch. He has a son with Monica named Tate Dutton.

Kayce is a former Navy Seal and often finds himself in undesirable situations due to his hot temper and penchant for finding trouble.

Grimes recently spoke about the discipline and attitude it take to play Kayce Dutton, describing the role as rigorous. He says he spent most of his days leading up to his role as Kayce on a horse in order to make it look authentic.

Grimes along with other actors on the show playing horseman and ranch hands underwent a program to train as cowboys.

“It started about two months before we began filming when I got the part,” he says of the intense training program Taylor (Sheridan) is really into authenticity, so I was on horseback almost every day.”

Grimes is referencing screenwriter and Director Taylor Sheridan, who created the popular series. Sheridan also was at the helm of western theme movies “Hell or High Water” and “Wind River.”

Luke Grimes and Yellowstone Cast Head to ‘Cowboy Camp’

Grimes says Sheridan told the crew it was important they knew there away around a saddle before filming. Once the actors took to a cowboy’s way of life, the show really came to life.

“When we got to Utah, where we filmed the first season, a lot of us went on a cowboy camp where we went on a pack trip that went out for three nights,” Grimes says. “Taking these horses up mountains, jumping creeks, and doing a lot of stuff that a lot of us had never done before just to try to get us into the feel of the place and of the world.”

The camp activities obviously paid off for the show as it is one of the most-watched shows on television. Filming for the fourth season recently wrapped and fans of the show are eagerly awaiting its return.
