Prior to potentially losing his ranch on “Yellowstone,” Kevin Costner almost lost his life in a terrifying car accident.
It’s crazy where life takes you on the way to your final destination. Thankfully, it eventually took Kevin Costner to the Montana set, however, not without its hiccups.
Costner may play this fearless cowboy and wise family patriarch on “Yellowstone,” but in real life, the young hopeful actor panicked as his life flashed before his eyes.
According to a 2015 interview with Tim Ferriss, Kevin Costner admits he didn’t have plans of becoming an actor until late into his college years. He notes that he was sitting in his senior class when he saw an audition for the play Rumpelstiltskin in his school’s newspaper.
“I just thought audition; I’d like to try that. I closed that newspaper; I listened to the person drone on,” Costner said. “But, what I knew at that moment, I was going to that audition the next day.”
Kevin Costner’s Quick Thinking
The next day rolls around, and Kevin Costner jumps in his Datsun pickup to head to the audition. Costner headed down the 55 freeway in Orange County, California when the unimaginable happens.
The vehicle’s accelerator broke and went to the floor as the car zoomed down the road, continuously gaining speed.
“All of a sudden, I saw the brake lights up ahead…and my speedometer is going from 60 to 70 to 80, and it’s not slowing down. And, I’m probably going to hit those people at about 90 miles per hour and kill them, kill myself.”
With nothing else to do and the oncoming traffic approaching quickly, Kevin Costner says he tried a last-ditch effort at stopping the car.
“I threw the clutch in. There was never such a terrible whine, but I thought, oh, my God, it did engage. But the engine was revving. I was able to turn the key off, and I coasted to a stop, pulled over into the emergency lane, and didn’t kill anybody.”
You would think that maybe this would deter Kevin Costner from his audition, but no. He ditched his car on the side of the busy highway and hitchhiked the rest of the way.
Unfortunately, Kevin Coster didn’t get the role for the play. Do you think they regret that decision looking back? However, after the audition, Costner realized his love for acting and began taking night classes at UCLA.
“I took two classes in film financing, film budgeting. I showed up for the first day of class, and I had already read the book, the entire book.”
Kevin Costner has become one of Hollywood’s most prominent names, appearing in plenty of big-budget films. Our favorite is easily “Yellowstone.” Call us loyal. Call us obsessed.
