Genuinely, this is one string o’ Yellowstone scenes we’ll never pass up the opportunity to watch. Relive “A Grandpa’s Story: John & Tate” right here on Outsider.

“We love to see John and Tate together,” the show’s official Twitter shares. “Watch their journey here,” they offer, before providing a link to their fantastic montage of the grandfather & grandson’s relationship. Why, we will do just that, Yellowstone.

Seeing John & Tate Dutton’s relationship develop over time has been one of the true joys of Yellowstone. The show can be harsh, gritty, and downright brutal. This is no complaint, to be sure, but it does make the bright spots – as this montage showcases – shine all the brighter.

Reliving these two’s precious relationship comes in the form of Yellowstone‘s powerful “A Grandpa’s Story: John & Tate,” which you can view below.

“That’s the thing about being a grandfather. I get to do all the things I wish I’d done with my children. And the things I regret, I get to do different.” – John Dutton

Saddle up and get ready to fall in love with Yellowstone all over again. The modern Western’s “Grandpa’s Story” reel will, as we can attest, squash even the hardiest of hearts.

After many years misunderstandings and the rockiest of roads between father and son, John Dutton has finally begun developing a relationship with his son, Kayce, throughout the seasons. This, in turn, allows him to get to know his grandson, Tate, as well. Paramount’s montage focuses on this relationship – and it’s a true testament to the show’s writing.

The son of Monica and Kayce Dutton, Tate has become a fixture of John’s life. The two have an incredible bond, but it wasn’t always there. It had to be built with multi-generational trust – a trust that John had to earn. And still is, too.

None of this, however, would be nearly as poignant without the exceptional writing and performances Yellowstone showcases. Specifically, Kevin Costner gives the best of his career to John Dutton. The same can be said for both of Tate’s parents, as the acting we’ve seen from Kayce’s Luke Grimes and Monica’s Kelsey Asbille previous to this series pales in comparison.

And then there’s young master Brecken Merrill. This child is, to put it plainly, the cutest little cowboy to ever saddle up. Whether he’s pondering the great mysteries of life with his grizzled grandpa, or telling every member of his family like it is, Tate Dutton has become the heart of Yellowstone through Merrill’s purely-lovable performance.

But that’s enough out of us. Relive this incredible montage below and, well, see for yourself:

Their relationship started out a bit rocky, but John (Kevin Costner) and Tate (Brecken Merrill) have developed a very special bond that’s become central to the Dutton family. Season 4 of Yellowstone, cable’s No. 1 drama, returns in 2021 on Paramount Network.
