‘Yellowstone’ TV Star Kelly Reilly Describes How Rip Wheeler is a ‘Level of Healing’ for Beth Dutton

Yellowstone characters Rip Wheeler and Beth Dutton are not your everyday kind of people. They are both damaged and use each other to pick up the pieces.

Yellowstone has thrown us some dark and twisted characters throughout the series, but none quite like Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler. They are the poster children of childhood trauma that never got the proper help. However, instead of seeking that out now in their adult life, they use each other as a “level of healing.”

Childhood Trauma

Rip Wheeler was just a teenager when his abusive father took things too far and killed his younger brother and mother. After Rip awakes from a beating he also took, to serve the same fate to his evil father. When the gruesome scene is over, and three lifeless bodies remain in his childhood home, Rip flees the scene, worried he would be arrested for murdering his father in self-defense. John Dutton finds him hiding in a storage warehouse and brings him back to the Yellowstone ranch, where he proceeds to meet the lovely Beth Dutton.

Beth Dutton isn’t as bright and shiny as she looks. Behind those strawberry-blonde bangs is an equally disturbed child. Unlike the rest of her family, Beth is uneasy on the back of a horse. When her horse spooks near the rest of her family, her mother’s horse rears up and rolls on her. Evelyn’s horse crushes her, leaving her motionless in a field, slowly dying. The last words Beth’s mother ever said to her were that her death was on her daughter’s hands.

Yeah, that is enough to scar you for life.

Kelly Reilly Describes Beth Dutton and Rip Wheelers Crutch for Each Other

Beth Dutton actress Kelly Reilly sat down for Deadline’s Contenders Television awards-season event to discuss how Rip and Beth are the calm in each other’s storm.

“Beth and Rip are soulmates and have been since they met. They are so tough and hard-headed, and the capacity of violence is in them both, but they provide a safe haven for quiet, peace, and love, and she doesn’t have that with anyone else in the show. We see them with all the other characters, and then when they are together, they just bring out a whole different color in each other. It provides a level of healing for Beth, a place for her to rest and lay down her weapons. Rip loves her in a way that’s so unconditional, and she’s starting to settle into that place. It’s so beautiful these broken characters are finding some sort of home with each other.”

Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler are people you don’t want to mess with on their own, let alone as a team. They are worse than poking a sleeping bear. While Rip will physically hurt you, Beth will mentally break you. The Bonnie and Clyde of crushing a person’s spirit and body.

Now we just have to sit here and hold our breath to see if Beth Dutton will live to see Yellowstone’s fourth season. Will our beloved couple live to see another day, or will Rip have to go on his tormenting streak alone?
