Country star Tim McGraw will be playing John Dutton’s (Kevin Costner) ancestor in the upcoming “Yellowstone” spinoff “1883.”

Along with his wife, Faith Hill, McGraw will be portraying one half of the couple who started it all. As James and Margaret Dutton, the country stars will tell the story of the Dutton family’s westward trek from poverty to opportunity across the stark, untamed Great Plains.

McGraw couldn’t be happier with the role, TV Line reports. Westerns fired his imagination as a youngster. So it’s a thrill for him to be acting in one himself.

“This is truly a dream job,” McGraw said in a statement. “[Series creator] Taylor [Sheridan] has found a way of storytelling that brilliantly creates these epic dramas and family sagas with so much depth and creativity. The Duttons are tremendous characters, and it’s so thrilling to be able to bring them to life. As a kid growing up riding horses, you think about dream jobs like this. And I am just so excited to work with this amazing cast and crew.”

Sam Elliott, Faith Hill Round Out ‘Yellowstone’ Prequel Cast

Other leads already cast include Hill and actor Sam Elliott. Elliott will play Shea Brennan, a weathered, dashing cowboy with a sad backstory. Moreover, Elliott’s character has to guide the group of settlers from Texas to Montana. But he’ll take no guff along the way.

“It all starts with the writing, and Taylor Sheridan is a brilliant writer,” Elliott said in a statement. “I think the western genre speaks clearly to both of us. The classic struggles of man against man, man against nature, and man against himself. It’s all there, in 1883, and I’m honored to be a part of it.”

Meanwhile, for her part, Hill said this represents a unique chance to bring a strong female lead to audiences across the country.

“This is the opportunity of a lifetime,” she said. “The Duttons are a formidable family, and it is an absolute dream to bring such a strong female character like Margaret Dutton to life. I am humbled and honored to work with Taylor and his entire team.”

The executive producers of “1883” are “Yellowstone” co-creator Sheridan and “Yellowstone” co-creator John Linson. Also executive producing are Art Linson, David Glasser, Ron Burkle and Bob Yari.

Tim McGraw Gets Back on the Road

After a recent show at the Watershed Festival in George, Washington, McGraw is ready to hit the road. And he’s got some concert dates coming up this autumn. On Sept. 1, he plays the Minnesota State Fairgrounds in St. Paul, Minnesota. On Sept. 18, he hits the Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. Then, on Oct. 9, he performs at Nugget Casino Resort in Sparks, Nevada.

“First real show we’ve done in a year and a half or so,” McGraw said from backstage at Watershed. “So we’re pretty dang pumped and looking forward to seeing all you guys out there.”

Now that he’s signed on to “1883,” McGraw will have to juggle the demands of acting and making music. But with the devoted family man’s three kids now grown and out on their own, a little multitasking is nothing he can’t handle.
