By Season 4 of Yellowstone, Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley) is growing quite close to his biological father, Garrett Randall (Will Patton). He seems to have forgiven Randall for killing his biological mother. He’s even letting Randall cook for the two of them.
Spoiler alert: If you haven’t watched Season 4 yet and want to find out for yourself what happens, read no further.
But then we learn that the man who put out a hit on the Duttons is Randall’s former cellmate. What exactly has Jamie’s biological dad been up to, and what are his motivations as Season 4 kicks off?
Yellowstone Fans Don’t Trust Jamie’s Biological Father
Jamie certainly seems to be the only one who likes Randall. Yellowstone fans are duly suspicious of him, as one commenter made clear in a recent Reddit thread. The poster pointed out that the prospect of Randall being involved in the hit on the Duttons was not exactly an earth-shattering revelation.
“I knew that was coming,” the fan posted. “The chain of people to order this hit, I just knew when it [turned out] to have come from a prisoner that they’d have spent time with Jamie’s bio dad. Maybe he’s a vendetta again John. Maybe he’s just trying to ruin him and crown Jamie King so he can get his share.”
What will happen next? Will Jamie step in and confront Randall? One fan suggested Randall may blackmail Jamie to get him to play along with whatever Randall is up to.
“Reveal it all to Kayce and John. Maybe he dies protecting them all. Just. Give me a redemption arc please!!” the fan concluded.
Jamie Is at a Critical Crossroads in Season 4
Now that Jamie knows his biological father has a connection to the man who put out a hit on his adoptive family, he faces a choice. He can tell John Dutton (Kevin Costner) what he’s found out. Or he can try to protect his biological father.
Jamie is not exactly known for his courage or moral clarity. So it will be interesting to see which way this goes. If Jamie truly meant what he told Kayce (Luke Grimes) in Episode 4, he’ll confront Randall about what he’s discovered. But Randall, who is unrepentant about killing Jamie’s mother, is not easily cowed. He could probably turn the tables on Jamie and talk him out of going to the Duttons with what he knows.
We now know Beth (Kelly Reilly) was wrong about Jamie’s complicity in the attacks on the Dutton clan. But will he be complicit in the coverup of their origins, proving Beth right after all? There’s only one way to find out. Yellowstone Season 4 airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET on the Paramount Network.
