Veteran actor Cole Hauser is quickly becoming a household name as Yellowstone’s resident tough guy, Rip Wheeler.
Hauser does an excellent job of turning Rip into a nuanced character that fans of the show have grown to love. Rip is the leader of the Yellowstone Ranch bunkhouse and keeps the hands in line with a no-nonsense style of leadership. The burly cowboy in black is also the Dutton family’s top enforcer and more than willing to take care of the family’s dirty work. Yellowstone watchers have seen Rip take extreme measures to keep his family and his ranch safe.
It is certainly safe to say that Hauser enjoys playing the character of Rip Wheeler. In a 2020 interview with The Havok Journal, Hauser is asked who his favorite character from his career to play is. The actor has taken on numerous characters through his time in Hollywood, but it comes as no surprise to who his favorite is.
“I have been asked that a lot over the years and it’s all of them,” he says. “Right now it is playing Rip and Yellowstone. I find myself getting so invested over the years in these characters.”
‘Yellowstone’s Cole Hauser Talks Bringing Rip to Life
Hauser goes on to describe how he brings his characters to life. He says he tries to give each of his roles a little color so that they aren’t “one-trick ponies.”
“I find little ways to try to make them as human as possible,” Hauser notes in the interview. “As well as make them multi-colored so they aren’t a one-trick pony.”
The end result, at least on Yellowstone, is a layered character that jumps off the screen and into the hearts of viewers. Rip is by far and away one of the most popular characters on the show.
“I really want the audience to go, wow man there are so many levels to that person,” he says. “I mean, when I’m in it I’m in it. Rip Wheeler is my passion and my love.”
Though it is still a couple of months from returning, fans of Yellowstone are gearing up for the fourth season. Rip expects to be a big part of the new season’s storyline — which definitely has fans excited.
