Along with many other twists and turns on Yellowstone’s third season, lawyer and son Jamie Dutton learns he is adopted, and his biological parents have a dark past.
After needing his birth certificate to be sworn in as the Attorney General of Montana, Jamie realized that the names on his birth certificate were not John and Evelyn Dutton like he thought for his whole life. Jamie came from a more troubling family that had their own secrets.
Who is Jamie Dutton? Well, for starters, he was born as James Micheal Randall. Jamie is also the only son of Garrett and the late Phyllis Randall.
Phyllis Randall, the Mother of Jamie Dutton
When Jamie was only three months old, his father, Garrett, beat his mother to death. Why? Garrett found Phyllis selling her body to pay for her drug addiction while baby Jamie lay in his bed, starving and sucking on a crack pipe. Let it be known that Garrett was no saint himself. He was also addicted to drugs at this time.
Apparently, Phyllis didn’t always have such a troubling past. John recalls her before she married Garrett.
“When he married the woman who gave birth to you, we begged her not to do it because we knew. But I guess she thought she could save him. I don’t know how to explain the chemistry of attraction, the thing that drives us to kill ourselves.”
The Duttons were friends of the Randalls, so when authorities charged Garrett with second-degree murder, they took in the infant as their own.
Garrett defended his decision to let the Dutton’s adopt his son, saying, “I’m sorry, but if things didn’t happen the way they did, you’d be dead, you’d be in prison. You’ve got on a road. You stay on it, son.”
Jamie confronted his adopted father, John, about the shocking news. He responded, saying, “I protected you, I guided you, I loved you, you can call me whatever you want, Jamie, but I will call you son because I have earned the right. It is the hardest thing I have ever done.”
We are curious to see where Jamies loyalties lie in the next season.
