‘Yellowstone’ TV: Will There Be Any Sort of Crossover With Spinoff ‘1883?’

It’s been one week since Taylor Sheridan’s “Yellowstone” prequel “1883” announced three major cast members. But fan theories are already pouring in as tentative filming begins in Texas.

Showrunners announced that big-time Hollywood actor Sam Elliott would star in the show as cowboy Shea Brennan. He’ll be joined by country superstars Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. The power couple will play James and Margaret Dutton, the great-grandparents of Kevin Costner’s John Dutton.

The “Yellowstone” prequel will trace the Dutton family’s journey out west to the “Great Plains” of Montana. Elliott as Brennan will be their guide on the long, hard trek “toward the last bastion of untamed America.” For the first time, we’ll see the origin of the family we’ve come to know and love on “Yellowstone.”

But will we ever get to see the two shows intertwine?

That’s the question. With the two shows set 140 years apart, the actual cast of characters will of course not be able to meet face-to-face. But the news outlet wonders if the flagship show’s tendency to use flashbacks could create a crossover event between “Yellowstone” and “1883.”

Express said media blog Cartermatt first proposed the idea that the flashbacks could be a way to tie the two together.

“It feels unlikely, but remember that we’ve seen some flashbacks before to a much earlier time in John Dutton’s life,” the blog wrote. “Given that there are stories on this show about land battles and the importance of the ranch to family legacy, it’s not impossible that we could see some sort of tease set up for thematic effect.”

It’s an interesting thought, and certainly plausible when we think about how John’s upbringing has shaped who he is. Why shouldn’t his ancestors play a role in that too?

Why We (Probably) Won’t See A ‘Yellowstone’ and ‘1883’ Crossover This Upcoming Season

Unfortunately, media blogger Cartermatt brings up a complication with this theory: “Yellowstone” Season 4 finished filming. It wrapped up last November, and ‘1883’ wasn’t announced until this year’s Super Bowl.

Even the cast wasn’t officially announced until a week ago. So, that’s no time at all for production to sneak in any kind of “1883” connection to the main show. The new season of “Yellowstone” is set to premiere sometime this October or November.

“The more likely scenario is that a potential Yellowstone season 5 could mention it. But at that point, there’d be almost no point,” Cartermatt said. “With ‘1883’ filming, it’s almost sure to premiere long before a season 5 would.”

Both Cartermatt and Express seemed pretty hung up on the crossover not happening before “1883” premieres. But does that really matter, in the long run? If anything, it might be more interesting for fans to fall in love with the cast and story of “1883” before the crossover takes place. That way it’ll be way more satisfying to see them appear in “Yellowstone.”
