“Yellowstone” fans know that the show loves flashbacks. And we, as the fans, love them too. The flashback scenes help us understand how our favorite characters came to be, which makes us love them even more.

This is certainly the case for the scenes with young John Dutton. The scenes depicted the struggles and family experiences John Dutton navigated in his youth that helped shape the man he is today. However, fans aren’t the only ones who loved the young John Dutton flashback scenes.

Josh Lucas, who played young John Dutton on “Yellowstone” also loved the concept. During an interview, Lucas talked about what it was like to portray a character as iconic as Kevin Costner’s John Dutton. He said he was “very very honored” to play the role. However, there were some challenges he faced while portraying the character on “Yellowstone.”

“Anytime you’re playing a personality that’s iconic and real, it’s harder to do it when the person is an actor,” said Lucas.

We’re sure it’s not easy having to literally fill the (younger) shoes of acting sensation Kevin Costner. Luckily, Lucas added that “Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan actually kept the two actors separate while filming scenes. This relieved some of the pressure and allowed Lucas to simply portray his character instead of worrying about what Kevin Costner was doing or thinking.

“Luckily, he’s not there when I’m shooting. We’re almost kept separate on purpose,” said Lucas.

Lucas also added that he and Taylor Sheridan used the iconic film, “The Godfather: Part II” as a reference point when talking about young John Dutton’s portrayal.

“Taylor and I talked about the idea of ‘The Godfather.’ When [Robert] De Niro was playing Brando, he wasn’t attempting to look or act like Marlon Brando. He was attempting to play the character,” added Lucas. “That’s what we talked about.”

Overall, Josh Lucas said he had a great time on set/ And how couldn’t you? The landscape alone is breathtaking. Pair that with an incredibly cool cast, and any actor would love to spend a day on the “Yellowstone” set.

Josh Lucas added that he’s love to get a chance to portray young John Dutton again. He even hopes that the show will dedicate entire episodes to flashbacks. “I really liked doing that show. There’s even been some talk of doing whole flashback episodes,” said Lucas. “That is my hope. I don’t know if or when that’ll happen, but I’m open to it, that’s for sure.”

Lucas said that he loved everything about working on “Yellowstone” even the challenges he had to overcome just to get to set.

“It’s one of the most beautiful shows that I’ve ever been a part of, in terms of the landscapes,” said Lucas. “Even getting to set can be extraordinarily challenging, where you’re like taking an ATV to a horse and then taking a horse to set. It’s the best.”
