These five-year-old hiking twins have probably done more in their short lives than you have in 20 plus years.
The “Super Hiking Twins” include five-year-old Matthew and Arabella Adams from Southern California, who are breaking records with every step along their local mountains. Altogether, the twins have made it to the top of more than 50 different peaks.
They currently hold the record for being the youngest people ever to summit Mt. Whitney, Mt. Langley, Mt. Shasta, and White Mountain, all located in California. Their first record came at just four years old.
After their recent summit of Mt. Shasta, the twins commented on their favorite part of the hike.
“My favorite part is the hot spring because it smells gross,” five-year-old Arabella said. “It’s really stinky!”
“It’s on Mt. Shasta,” her twin brother Matthew informed her. “Because Mt. Shasta’s a volcano.”
Mt. Shasta boasts an elevation of 14,180 feet. We get out of breath climbing up a flight of stairs!
Hiking Twins Continue to Conquer Mountains
Hiking is nothing new to the young climbers. Despite their knowledge, their first hike was at just six-weeks-old, while harnessed to their parent’s chests.
By two-and-a-half years old, they were tackling the mountain on their own two feet.
Their mother, Nancy Adams, says her ‘Super Hiking Twins’ grow closer with every climb.
“She does call him her buddy. ‘You’re my buddy.'” Nancy Adams said. “It’s very heartwarming to see such a close bond between them. It makes my heart melt.”
The Little Engine That Could
Adams comments that she brings her children on hikes for an important lesson, but the fun they have along the way is just a bonus.
“You can always overcome the challenges,” Nancy Adams said. “Hopefully, as adults, they’ll remember that. Just overcoming like, ‘hey, I did it, and I know I can do it.’ Like the Little Engine that Could, ‘I think I can, I think I can.'”
Nancy Adams admits that even she gets tired and feels defeated while hiking at points. Her inspiration? That would be her young twins that continuously encourage her along the way.
“With him (Matthew), there are some hikes even for myself, he’s telling me, ‘Mom come on, you can do it.’ And for him to say that, it makes me feel like okay if he’s telling me, ‘You can do it,’ I know I can push myself. So, both of them are my own and my husband as well, our inspiration.”
One day, they hope to summit the tallest mountain in the world, Mount Everest. At the pace they are currently going, they could be on top of the word at age ten! Matthew and Arabella also note that they are already saving up for the trip.
When KTVL asked the pair how much they have saved thus far, the Adams twins admitted that they’re unsure because they do not know how to count yet. Matthew claimed that by the time he and his sister at 85, they will have made the trek. He says they plan on hiking for “a million” years.
Keep dreaming big, twins! Glad to see you understand the importance of exploring together and building memories like Outsiders.
