The aliens did not do it. The pop-up metal monolith that was spotted in a remote Utah desert on Nov. 18 was dismantled. However, we now know that it was not by the hands of a non-Earth-goer.
A monolith is a single stone that is often in the shape of an obelisk or a column. The Utah monolith has a column-shape.
When the mysterious monolith was spotted in Utah, the government said it did not know where it came from or its possible theft about a week later.

Originally the region’s sheriff department did not take the object seriously, posting a funny “most wanted” image of aliens on their Facebook page. However, Monday night they issued an announcement that an investigation would begin with the Bureau of Land Management.
According to The New York Times, Ross Bernards from Colorado was visiting to take pictures of the monolith. It was then that he saw four men randomly come and dismantle the sculpture.
“Suddenly, around 8:40 p.m., he said, the men arrived, their voices echoing in the canyon. Working in twosomes, with an unmistakable sense of purpose, they gave the monolith hard shoves, and it started to tilt toward the ground. Then they pushed it in the opposite direction, trying to uproot it,” according to The New York Times.
Bernards claimed that the one called it “trash” while they were removing it.
Many people on the internet are claiming that whoever put it up most likely took it down as well.
However, much of its mystery comes from not knowing who put it up, and why a group of men came to take it in the middle of the night.
From Monolith to Meme
The internet continues to theorize on the strange events in the Utah-desert, but they also joke about it.
One tweet jokes that it came back with stories, photoshopping in the recently-notorious story bubbles appearing on social media apps.
Famous chef Guy Fieri took the joke to next-level flavor-town.
Many also fear that this all may just be a marketing ploy. Multiple businesses have already started to attach their brand to the monolith and the whole situation.
Most recently, news has emerged that a metal monolith in Romania had a similar situation. It appeared in a county in the mountains and then four days later it vanished. Many are wondering if the two events are related.
Or, if the Earth is doomed.
