Rooster Attacks and Kills Police Officer During Cockfighting Raid

by Chris Haney

On Tuesday, a police officer in the Philippines was killed during a raid on an illegal cockfighting event when a rooster with a blade attached to its leg caused a fatal wound after attacking the cop.

Police in the Philippines raided the illegal cockfight held in Northern Samar. Cockfighting is popular in the region and is legal during certain days of the year. It is allowed at licensed venues on Sundays and specific holidays in the country. But, cockfighting events have been outlawed this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Philippines officials reported that Lieutenant Christian Bolok picked up a rooster during the raid while collecting evidence. The bird proceeded to cut the officer with the steel razor blade attached to its leg. Bolok received a wound to his left thigh from the blade, which tore through his femoral artery. The officer’s wound caused him to bleed out and eventually pass away following the rooster’s attack.

Colonel Arnel Apud, the local police chief, shared a statement with the AFP news agency. He described the rooster’s attack on Bolok as “a piece of bad luck that I cannot explain.”

“I could not believe it when it was first reported to me. This is the first time in my 25 years as a policeman that I lost a man due to a fighting cock’s spur,” the colonel explained.

Officers rushed Bolok to a nearby hospital following the rooster’s attack. However, the rescue was to no avail as he was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
