A man in Florida was bit on the shoulder by a shark while snorkeling with his family over the weekend.

Andrew Eddy, a 30-year-old from Atlanta, suffered a “severe” shark bite “almost immediately” upon entering the water while snorkeling in Florida. His pregnant wife quickly jumped into the water and pulled him to safety, say authorities.

The attack happened at Sombrero Key Light on Sunday, the Monroe County Sheriff’s office said in a statement.

According to the incident report written by Deputy Christopher Aguanno, Eddy’s wife, Margot Dukes Eddy, saw the shark’s dorsal fin. Next, she saw the water fill with her husband’s blood.

“Dukes, without hesitation, dove into the water and pulled Eddy to the safety of the boat,” Aguanno wrote.

Most of Eddy’s family, including his parents-in-law, sister-in-law, and her boyfriend, were already in the water when the attack took place.

Around 10:30 a.m. Eddy was taken to Sombrero Beach. From there, medical personal flew him to Ryder Trauma Center in Miami, said the statement from the sheriff’s office.

Although his injuries were said to be severe, his current condition has not been released. Dukes Eddy has also yet to respond to comments about the case or her husband’s condition.

Witnesses reported seeing a bull shark in the area. The family says that the shark that bit Eddy was around eight to ten feet long. No one else was hurt in the attack.

“This was a very rare medical crisis for the Florida Keys, but everyone came together, including those witnesses on the boat to 911 Communicators to all our emergency responders, in order to ensure this victim received life-saving care,” Sheriff Ramsay said.

Uncommon Shark Attack

According to the University of Florida International Shark Attack File, there have only been 17 random shark attacks in Monroe County since 1882.
