On Monday, March 22, a seal in Britain was attacked by a dog. Sadly, the animal known as Freddie Mercury had to be put down after the incident by a local veterinarian.

The seal was only ten months old and had begun spending most of his time along the banks of the River Thames in London. Unfortunately, though, a dog walker was spending time with her dog off-leash when the accident occurred.

Reportedly, the unleashed dog charged at the seal and was attacking it viciously. There was a photographer nearby who happened to be taking pictures and saw the incident occurring. He began taking pictures of the events as they were unfolding.

A Dog Sadly Attacked and Killed a Seal Living on the River Thames

Quickly, four people, including the dog’s owner, were able to get their hands on the dog and the seal. But the dog just wouldn’t let go. Duncan Phillips was one of the people trying to get the dog off of Freddie Mercury and describes the scene.

“The dog just wouldn’t let go. It wouldn’t let go despite repeated attempts by members of the public to separate the animals.”

Finally, after what must have felt like hours, the bystanders and dog owner were able to pry the dog off of the seal. But, when the animal was finally away from the dog, the damage was assessed, and it did not look good.

Freddie was taken to the local veterinarian to see what could be done. However, the vets that were attending to the seal quickly realized that the best course of action was to end his suffering. During the fight with the dog, Freddie had fractured one of his flippers badly and one of the many bite wounds was infected.

Pictures of the event depict just how gruesome the spectacle really. There was blood all over the beach from the bleeding seal. Additionally, the people working to pry the dog off were covered with blood, and so too was the dog.

The Aftermath of the Horrific Accident

A day later, police began investigating the death of Freddie Mercury to see if any wrongdoing took place. But, it was determined that the dog owner was not at fault. However, the owner released a public apology, expressing how terrible she felt about the incident.

“I am heartbroken by this terrible accident. As an animal lover, I fully understand the dismay that has been expressed. I apologize unreservedly for what happened. In hindsight, I wish, of course, that the dog had been on a lead, but at the time, that did not seem necessary. I am hugely grateful to all those who helped at the scene. They were heroic. I left for my own safety and that of my dog, believing that there was nothing that I could do to help as the seal was being looked after by a vet and help had been called.”

Her statement continues to explain just how heartbroken she is about the accident. Hopefully, she can forgive herself down the road.

There is even a petition circulating Twitter asking for people to sign that implores the local police to severely punish the dog owner. It was a truly tragic scene for those who love animals. And especially for those who had a growing fondness for the seal.
