A farmer tends to his crops.

Farmer Suffers Heart Attack, 60 Neighbors Join Together To Harvest His Crops

Farmer Lane Unhjem found himself in the middle of his wheat field when he suffered a heart attack.

He had been harvesting wheat and canola while on his farm in Crosby, North Dakota. All of a sudden, his combine caught fire. When he went into cardiac arrest, he was taken to the hospital immediately.

Still, work around the farm had to get done. So Unhjem’s neighbors pulled together to try and make a difference for the farmer. Around 60 of them pulled together to make sure the family’s harvest was complete. They even used their own equipment to assist.

“I talked to a couple of farmers, got their equipment, and then other people just started calling and we had equipment offered from all over the place in the county, and their workers to go with it,” family friend Jenna Binde told CNN affiliate KFYR.

Had the crops gone unattended, it would have resulted in a massive loss. There were about 1,000 acres harvested in about seven hours.

“Everybody knows the Unhjems, and they’re good people and good in the community, and it’s just kind of the farming way of life, too. You help your neighbor out when they need it, and don’t expect anything in return,” Binde told KFYR.

Unhjem is still facing quite a long road to recovery before he can get back to harvesting work.
