Female Hunter’s Enormous Bull Elk Deemed Second Largest in Minnesota History

I guess you can call Lacey Lupien’s first bull elk hunt a success. The 33-year-old nurse recently bagged the second-largest bull elk in Minnesota history. In fact, the animal is so large, she and her family are planning on remodeling their home to accommodate the mount for the animal, the Star Tribune reported.

The Boone and Crocket Club certified Lupien’s prized bull elk had a 7-by-9 rack and a net score of 367 2/8 inches, the paper said. The Boone and Crockett Club began keeping big game records more than a century ago.

Lupien said she brought down the elk on Aug. 6. She received one of only 44 elk tags distributed through the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources this year, Fox News said.

Lupien was hunting near her home in Lancaster, Minnesota, a small town just south of the Canadian border. She was perched in her neighbor’s box stand when the massive elk stepped out from the woods about 250 yards away from her. Though it wasn’t the first time she’d seen the creature. She and her husband and their two children had tracked a herd of elk near their home for weeks.

Lupien said it leveled her .300 Winchester Magnum rifle, and fired once.

“We heard it crash into the woods,” she said, according to the paper. “It was so exciting.”

She subsequently found the elk about 120 yards from where she’d shot it.

The Lupien family will be eating elk steaks for some time to come. She told the paper that they now have three freezers filled with elk meat.

According to TwinCities.com, Brad Penas has the record for the largest bull elk taken in Minnesota. He brought down an elk that was measured at 393 2/8 inches in 2013. He killed that elk only about 20 miles from where Lupien killed hers.
