A pair of hunters have survived a grizzly attack after they surprised a mother bear with her cubs. The harrowing incident took place early Wednesday morning in Sandpoint, Idaho.
The near-mauling happened within the Apache Ridge area of the Upper Pack River drainage. Both archery hunters say they “didn’t even realize” the grizzly and her cubs were close by. By the time they did, it was almost too late.
Once the bears revealed themselves, the hunting duo began scrambling through the attack for their bear spray. Thankfully, they had it on hand and ready for use to fend off the angry mother. Before they could escape, however, one of the hunters was wounded by the bear.
Bow Hunters Ultimately Survive Their Bear Attack
Thankfully, both hunters were capable of escaping the backcounty withouht emergency assistance. The injured party was then transported to a nearby hospital. As a result of the attack, he received stitches and treatment for bruising, but has been released.
The Idaho Department of Fish and Game is currently investigating the incident. Any parties planning to hunt or camp within the area are asked to use extreme caution. They recommend, as do all outdoor experts, to carry bear spray in known bear habitats. Without a doubt, these two hunters are certainly glad they had theirs on hand. One tiny can saved both their lives.
