Not exactly the buried treasure you might hope to find while snorkeling, but one Florida Keys person finds $1.5 Million worth of cocaine.

On Wednesday, a snorkeler was out paddling around in the ocean near Craig Key when they spotted something floating on the surface. You know what they say, curiosity killed the cat, or in this case, located the drugs.

According to Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, when the snorkeler opened the black bag that someone wrapped in tape. The contents revealed 68 pounds of cocaine.

Investigators say that the cocaine was shaped into 25 large individual bricks.

Being a good samaritan and an ethical person, the snorkeler turned in the bricks of cocaine to the sheriff’s office. The office then turned the drugs into the U.S. Border Patrol.

The Border Patrol valued the significant find at more than $1.5 million.

Someone is not going to be happy when their shipment does not make it to its final destination. However, investigators are unable to say where the cocaine came from.

Chief Patrol Agent Thomas G. Martin tweeted following the incident. The tweet is coupled with an accompanying photo of the massive bricks.

“On Wednesday, a Good Samaritan discovered 68 lbs. of cocaine valued at over 1.5 million dollars floating in the #FloridaKeys. The individual noticed a large black bundle wrapped in tape & contacted local authorities. The bag contained 25 bricks of cocaine. #breakingnews #florida.”

More Cocaine

This is far from the first sizable drug discovery to happen recently. In August of 2020, Florida Beach Patrol seized over $1 million worth of cocaine that washed onto the beach in Hollywood, Florida.

A statement by the U.S. Border Patrol Miami Sector says, “The 30 packages of cocaine weighed approximately 78 pounds with an estimated street value of over one million dollars.”

Again, Chief Patrol Agent Thomas G. Martin tweeted about the incident. The officer said, “On Monday, a beachgoer discovered 30 packages with 78 lbs. of cocaine that washed-up at #Hollywood Beach #Florida. Miami Sector #BorderPatrol Agents seized the narcotics, valued at over 1 million dollars. Thankfully, the 78 lbs. of drugs didn’t make it into our community.”
