There’s something coming for people to look forward (and up) to.

One of the most breathtaking full moons of 2021 will be taking over the sky on May 26. What exactly is the upcoming full moon?

What is the Super Flower Blood Moon?

It is called the super flower blood moon. Not only is it a supermoon, but it also happens to be a blood moon due to some exceptional timing from a lunar eclipse. So the moon will appear larger than usual because it is at its closest point to Earth in its orbit. At the same time, an eclipse will make the moon take on an entirely different look.

Like the name implies, the upcoming blood moon will have the infamous red glow. This occurs because the Earth is positioned directly between the moon and the sun during the total lunar eclipse, which means it is blocked from any form of sunlight. The flower moon part of the name comes from the traditional name for May’s full moon.

“When this happens, the only light that reaches the moon’s surface is from the edges of the Earth’s atmosphere. The air molecules from Earth’s atmosphere scatter out most of the blue light. The remaining light reflects onto the moon’s surface with a red glow, making the moon appear red in the night sky,” NASA explained.

If you’re expecting a deep, dark, and vibrant shade of red, you may be a bit let down on May 26. It’s hard to predict just how red the moon will look in the sky. The dust present in the environment plays a role in this factor. There have also been several volcanic eruptions recently that could lead to more dust in the sky.

When and Where Will the Moon Be Visible

It is completely safe to look at a lunar eclipse with your bare eyes. However, solar eclipses should never be directly looked at. Will everyone be able to catch a glimpse of the super flower blood moon?

NASA also said the lunar eclipse will be partly visible to anybody living on the planet’s night side. Those who live in the Western part of America, Australia, New Zealand, and Eastern Asia will have the best view for the May 2021 eclipse. The eclipse will obviously take place at the same moment in time everywhere, but the exact time will differ for everyone just due to time zones.

If you want to see the best of the moon, those in places like California or Hawaii will have the best views. Hopefully, they have some good photographers as well.

If you live in the U.S. and want to see the eclipse, you better prep a pot of coffee the night before. In the Eastern states, the eclipse will start during dawn twilight. For those in the West, you’ll see even more of the eclipse before the moon sets that morning. It starts at 7:14 a.m. EDT on Wednesday, May 26. The entire event will go rather quickly. It will last approximately 14 minutes and 30 seconds and will be very bright.

Those who have a clear, dark sky for the event may even see the Milky Way. It would be an incredibly fleeting moment but is possible since there is no sunlight at all in the night sky for a moment.

According to Forbes, the supermoon part of the natural event could bring what is known as a “king tide.” This could then lead to flooding in different coastal areas.
