Weather Radar Detects Thousands of Bats Flying Out of Arizona Tunnels

A radar scan out of a science fiction movie

At first, the phenomenon almost looks like a hurricane taking place in the middle of Arizona – complete with an eye. It fans out in all directions, however, debunking any chance of it being a storm.

Curiously, this most recent outburst of bats takes place completely within an urban area. This leads experts to guess that the massive swarm was roosting underneath a bridge – and then decided to head out to catch dinner for the night. And what is dinner for your typical bat? Insects. Lots – and lots – of insects.

For this reason, bats are an integral part of ecosystems. They’re extremely beneficial predators – and experts at reducing mosquitos in populated ares. They may be scary to some, but bats are truly one of humanity’s most productive friends.
