A woman in Sydney who found hundreds of baby spiders in her daughter’s room had a jarring reaction to the sight.

“They’re so cute!” she squealed, pointing them out on camera in between laughing and cracking jokes.

“Should we burn the house down?” she quipped jovially. “We might have to do that.”

Spiders Overtake Sydney Girl’s Room

Meanwhile, the spiders occupy two corners of her daughter’s room. And they are quite large for baby spiders.

According to Yahoo! News Australia, they are huntsman spiders. Huntsman spiders can grow to as big as 15 centimeters, or 5.9 inches, across the legs. They are greyish brown with eight eyes.

Moreover, huntsman spiders do not build webs. They hunt for food such as insects and invertebrates. And they use venom to neutralize their prey.

They live in tropical and semi-tropical areas, including Australia, New Zealand, Southeast Asia, the Mediterranean, Florida and Hawaii, per AnimalCorner.org.

Female huntsman spiders can produce as many as 200 eggs – not a reassuring fact for that family in Sydney. They are pale in color when they’re first born before growing into a darker brown, like the spiders in the video, which are probably not newborns.

A Scary Type of Spider

While huntsman spider bites are not fatal to humans, they can cause extended pain, inflammation, headache, vomiting and an irregular pulse. So definitely not the kind of furry friend you’d want cohabitating with your daughter.

The spiders are relatively common in Australia. In 2017, a large huntsman spider trapped a Queensland couple in their home.

The couple named the spider “Aragog,” a reference to the giant Harry Potter arachnid with many offspring.

“It was preventing us from using our BBQ,” Lauren Ansell told the Sunshine Coast Daily. “We made it unhappy as we tried to move it so we could cook. My boyfriend tried to squish it in the door but the spider was smart. The door only claimed two of its legs and it dropped and ran into the garden.”

Considering the size that adult huntsman spiders can grow to, that Sydney family may want to get an exterminator into their daughter’s bedroom as quickly as possible. It’s something to consider before burning the house down.
