A circus lion went rogue in front of a terrified audience during a performance in Russia. Watch the horrifying video here.

Lions, tigers, and bears, oh my. Three animals we would surely not want to get too close to, tamed or not. However, what started as a fun and entertaining circus act quickly turned for the worse when a lion brutally attacked the tamer during a show in Russia.

The Lion Attack

The shocking events were also all captured on video, where the tamer, armed with a whip, was powerless compared to the beast.

According to the New York Post, the Russian circus featured two lionesses wrestling in the ring in front of a ‘roaring’ crowd. One of the massive cats, named Vega, leaped at the trainer who gripped a pole. Once he was dragged him to the ground and on top of him, Vega proceeded to bite the trainer repeatedly while the man attempted to fight back.

Men outside the cage start stabbing the lion with long sticks to scare away the beast.

However, Vega isn’t done yet. The lioness continues to come at the trainer and tackles him once again. The crowd screams as the predator bites the man. Despite being attacked twice, the circus performer rises and exits the ring on his own two feet.

You can watch the video here. However, be cautious of graphic imagery.

The lion tamer, named Maxim Orlov, was rushed to a local hospital in Moshkovo, Novosibirsk region, reports the Daily Mail.

Shocked Crowd

The audience was so terrified, a pregnant woman in attendance had a seizure after witnessing the events.

Another woman that attended the circus, named Viktoria, recounts the chaotic scene, saying, “The lionesses went berserk! When we ran away, there was a wild roar from the animals. The tamer was attacked. A pregnant woman had an epileptic seizure from fright. An ambulance was called.”

Orlov was up and talking while at the hospital. He notes that he doesn’t blame the lion for the attack.

“Cases such as today are very rare, but animals are animals,” and said the 5-year-old lion, “has been wayward since childhood.”

Orlov notes that this will be Vega’s last time in the ring. He said the circus would attempt to negotiate with zoos to trade Vega for a cub.

The trainer also blamed the pandemic for the attack, saying they were out of practice from the pause.
