Jay Cutler and Brandon Try Out 3 Celebrity Whiskeys From John Prine, Metallica, and Jon Pardi: The Double

Hosts Jay Cutler and Brandon Chesbro are back in town after their moose hunting trip last week in Maine. Unfortunately for the guys, it wasn’t exactly a successful excursion even though they trekked 50 miles through the wilderness. They didn’t spot a single moose, and now they’re back in Nashville drowning their sorrows on this week’s episode of The Double.

“I don’t think there’s moose [in Maine],” a dejected Jay Cutler joked. “If I figured out anything in Maine, it’s if there is a Sasquatch, he lives somewhere in the north Maine woods. There’s no doubt about it. And he might be the only thing living up there, cause we sure as hell didn’t see any animals.”

“It seems like an appropriate time to drink whiskey,” Brandon said.

“Something’s gotta change, so might as well,” Jay amusingly responded.

At least the guys have some fun whiskeys to try out this week to hopefully lift their spirits a bit after their dud of a hunting trip. Brandon has three more new bottles for them to try out this week. They’ll specifically be tasting a few celebrity whiskeys on the show.

In fact, the guys are testing out three separate whiskeys from famous musicians. We’ve got bottles from country singer Jon Pardi, heavy metal legends Metallica, and iconic country-folk singer John Prine. So let’s get to sippin’ and try to improve Jay Cutler’s mood along the way.

Buffalo Chip Spirits’ Pardi Batch Premium Tennessee Whiskey (Jon Pardi)

  • Color: Light Amber
  • Taste: Subtle sweetness
  • Finish: Smoky finish
  • Proof: 80 Proof, or 40% Alcohol by Volume
  • MSRP: $29.99

The guys are starting out today’s whiskey tasting with an offering from country musician John Pardi and Buffalo Chip Spirits. The distillery has created two whiskeys for the “Night Shift” singer. So far, Buffalo Chip has made the Pardi Batch Premium Tennessee Whiskey and the Pardi Batch 112 Straight Bourbon Whiskey.

The guys are testing out the Tennessee whiskey today on the show, but Brandon already has his reservations. He likes high-proof whiskeys, and 80 proof just might not cut it. Let’s find out.

“You know this is not my jam,” Brandon declared as he saw the proof count.

“Oh, I’m well aware,” Jay said.

“Hey, listen. If you’re a country music artist and you want to be drinking all night, 80 proofs the way to go, right? You can’t be drinking 120 proof,” Brandon continued.

“You can. It just probably won’t end well,” Jay responded.

After their first sip, both of the guys shared the same opinion, which Jay summed up by simply saying, “As expected.”

“Little sweet there at the end,” Jay Cutler added after drinking Jon Pardi’s whiskey.

“It is sweet. I could literally drink that entire bottle in a day,” Brandon said.

“I don’t see why not,” Jay concluded.

Final verdict: after being a little wary of an 80 proof whiskey, both Jay and Brandon said they’re “in” on the Pardi Batch whiskey.

Blackened American Whiskey (Metallica)

  • Color: Light Amber
  • Nose: Burnt caramel, oak & honey
  • Palate: Honey, cinnamon, allspice, dark fruit, clove and mint
  • Finish: Long and smooth, slightly creamy with hints of butterscotch taffy, maple and honey
  • Proof: 90 Proof, or 45% Alcohol by Volume
  • MSRP: $39.99

The guys have both heard about this next one but never actually tried the whiskey. Heavy metal icons Metallica have created a unique spirit with an interesting distilling process. Jay Cutler has heard the story behind the whiskey and asked if it’s true.

“Is it true they put [the whiskey] in a dark warehouse for a year and just blast Metallica music to the barrels?” Jay Cutler asked.

It’s true indeed, Jay. In fact, according to Blackened American Whiskey‘s official website, the spirit is a “blend of hand-selected, well-aged North American bourbon & rye whiskeys, uniquely finished in black brandy casks and the earth-shattering music of Metallica.”

Now for the true test. Will Jay Cutler and Brandon enjoy Metallica’s offering? They love the story and the slogan – “Born in cask, forged by sound.” But how does it taste?

“I can smell some of their songs,” Jay hilariously said as he sniffed the whiskey in his glass before tasting it.

“Warm, not very old,” he added.

“No, it’s, it’s…” Brandon started to say before Jay told him to change the foul look on his face. “I’m just trying to process what I just tasted. I mean there’s nothing complex about it.”

The Bard Distillery’s Muhlenburg Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (John Prine) *Limited Edition

  • Color: Amber
  • Nose: N/A
  • Palate: N/A
  • Finish: N/A
  • Proof: 101 Proof, or 50.5% Alcohol by Volume
  • MSRP: $75.99

As Brandon shared, the guys are moving on to the “star of the show” with legendary singer-songwriter John Prine’s limited edition whiskey. As part of a celebration of Prine’s life and songs, Nashville is holding a special 6-day event called YOU GOT GOLD.

As part of the celebration, The Bard Distillery created a limited edition bourbon that’s only available at select locations in Music City. Further, the distillery only made 6,000 bottles of the spirit. So let’s cheers to John Prine and taste this limited edition Muhlenburg Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey.

“Okay, now that’s complexity,” Brandon said after taking a drink.

“There we go. Now we’re talking,” Jay agreed. ” John! Nice work.”

“That’s everything I want in a bourbon. It’s spicy, it’s got the caramel notes. 100%. It’s so good,” Brandon added.

We’ve got a clear favorite on the day. We think John Prine himself would be proud of the limited edition bourbon made in his name. And the guys would agree since it’s their clear winner on the day.

“This was a good one,” Jay Cutler said as they brought another episode of The Double to an end. “Jon, Metallica, other John… well done guys.”
