We’re back with another episode of The Double, and once again we’re taking the show on the road. This weekend, our hosts Jay Cutler and Brandon Chesbro attended the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) event at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. While enjoying the new PBR Team Series, they made sure to bring along three bottles of whiskey to try out on The Double.
For their most recent round of tastings, Brandon selected classic Kentucky whiskeys from Bulleit Distilling Co. The guys are trying out two Bulleit staples in the distillery’s Bourbon and Rye Whiskeys. Plus, Brandon brought along a special bottle of Bulleit Bourbon 10 Year Old. It’s the perfect trio of whiskeys to pair with a fun day of bull riding in Music City.
“In the spirit of bull riding, let’s go classic. We’re goin’ Bulleit,” Brandon said as he unveiled the whiskeys for the day.
The guys didn’t have cups to drink out of at the event. So, they’re drinkin’ straight from the bottle on this episode of The Double. Somehow it seems more fitting anyways at a bull riding event.
“We’re going Bulleit,” Brandon added. “Now, do you drink Bulleit a lot?”
“I do like Bulleit,” Jay answered. “I mean we say it all the time. I like Bulleit for Old Fashioneds.”
However, today the guys will be sippin’ on Bulleit straight. No ice cubes, no mixed drinks, just whiskey the way it was made and straight from the bottle. So let’s get to it!
Bulleit Bourbon
- Color: Medium amber
- Nose: Gentle spiciness and sweet oak aromas
- Taste: Tones of maple, oak, and nutmeg
- Finish: Long, dry, and satiny with a light toffee flavor
- Proof: 90 Proof, or 45% Alcohol by Volume
- MSRP: $31.99
First on the menu today, Jay and Brandon are testing out Bulleit’s flagship bourbon. The classic whiskey is inspired by an old family recipe that dates back 150 years. The unique spirit utilizes an especially high amount of rye grains for a bourbon and pure Kentucky limestone filtered water.
“Let’s give it a shot,” Brandon says before taking a swig of the Bulleit Bourbon and passing it to Jay.
“If I was a bull rider, I’d probably take at least one to two shots before I got on a bull,” Jay said before taking a drink.
“100%!” Brandon agreed on The Double.
“Love it,” Jay said of the bourbon before amusingly getting sidetracked. “All I smell is cows, horses, and s**t. So, I’ll drink damn near anything at this point.”
Bulleit Rye Whiskey
- Color: Russet
- Nose: Rich oaky aromas
- Taste: Exceptionally smooth, with hints of vanilla, honey, and spice
- Finish: Crisp and clean, with long, lingering flavors
- Proof: 90 Proof, or 45% Alcohol by Volume
- MSRP: $31.99
Next up, Jay and Brandon are tasting another mainstay of the distillery in the Bulleit Rye Whiskey. Although Bulleit Rye didn’t release until 2011, it’s already an award-winning spirit and one of the most popular ryes around. Considering ryes are Jay’s go-to whiskey these days it seems, we know this will be a winner in his book. But before the guys taste the Bulleit Rye, Brandon had a question for his friend.
“Would you ever try it? Try riding a bull?” Brandon asked the former NFL quarterback on The Double.
“No,” Jay responded while shaking his head back and forth. “I haven’t said the F word in this one yet. And I’m not going to, but no.”
“Okay, it’s a hard pass,” Brandon said.
“It’s not even close to a pass. It’s so far beyond [a pass for me]. Did you see those things in there?!” Jay hilariously said of the bulls on the PBR Tour. “It’s like 1,500 pounds of muscle. No chance.”
Brandon bought a smaller bottle of the Bulleit Rye for only $9. And Jay realized it fit perfectly in his back pocket. We all know what he was sippin’ on the rest of the day.
“Okay, it’s really good,” Brandon said of the rye. “I think I like the regular [bourbon] better.”
“No. Love it, it’s coming with me. This is mine now. I dare someone to stop me,” Jay said as he put the bottle of rye in his back pocket to save for later.
Bulleit Bourbon 10 Year Old
- Color: Deep russet
- Nose: Rich oaky aromas
- Taste: Consistently smooth taste with vanilla, dried fruit
- Finish: Long, smoky finish
- Proof: 91.2 Proof, or 45.6% Alcohol by Volume
- MSRP: $39.99
Finally, we’re rounding out the day with a special one from Bulleit today on The Double. Slightly harder to find, the guys are tasting the Bulleit Bourbon 10 Year Old. Just as the name implies, this particular bourbon is aged for 10 years in charred American white oak barrels. The result lends itself to an incredibly smooth sipping experience, which Jay and Brandon both loved.
“Let’s give this one a whirl,” Brandon said before taking a sip of the aged bourbon and passing it on.
“Clear winner,” he added, comparing the 10 Year to the previous two Bulleit whiskeys.
“Not even close,” Jay said on The Double. “It’s actually really good.”
“I mean, clear winner. That’s really good. Bulleit, I’m pleasantly surprised,” Brandon shared.
“I got my back pocket bottle. That’s great,” Jay said pointing to the 10 Year. “PBR, thanks for having us out. It’s gonna be a blast tonight. Can’t wait. Let’s go watch some bulls and some horses run around.”
“And people probably get destroyed,” Brandon chimed in as the show came to a close.
“Oh, 100%,” Jay said.
