2020 Tokyo Olympics: One Man Stands Outside The Games Every Day With Inspiring Signs for the Athletes

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics have lacked one important thing: spectators. But one man has stood outside the games every day with inspirational signs to keep some semblance of encouragement and cheer alive.

Tokyo has been buzzing with Olympic hype. This man has taken that hype to the next level.

His sign says “Good morning athletes! Even if you don’t get a medal, you’re still the best!! So believe in yourself!”

The adorable message for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic athletes is enough to make your weekend and it’s an important reminder that you don’t have to win gold to be incredible at what you do.

The man, who wants to remain anonymous, has stood outside as early as 7:15 a.m. and holds up the same every time a bus transporting Olympians drives by. According to Timeout, the man initially started holding welcome signs when athletes first started arriving.

Apparently, he changed his message when he saw just how focused people were on the medal count.

On Twitter, people are reacting with nothing but love.

“What a sweet, kind-hearted man! This is a lovely gesture. He needs a medal, more than any athlete does, because THIS is the true Olympic spirit embodied,” one person wrote in response to the Timeout story.

Another person echoed that sentiment.

“I haven’t watched or even noticed this year’s Olympics (my apologies 2 Japan & 2 Tokyo), but this guy has my full, teary-eyed attention!” they wrote. According to Timeout, the man will continue to hold signs until August 8th, the final day of the games.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics Ends Tomorrow

A year later than it was supposed to, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics are coming to an end tomorrow, August 8th. It’s been a year riddled with problems that stemmed from before the pandemic even began, but still, the athletes waited, trained, and persevered until they were finally able to compete.

The ratings for this year’s events also suffered in the United States. Many nights only reached around half of what they did during the 2016 Rio Games. It was a definite low, even with an expected hit to ratings. And while ratings plummeted, Temperatures soared, causing a host of problems for athletes competing outdoors.

But it wasn’t all doom and gloom. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics had some beautiful moments and epic wins. In one instance, Tunisian swimmer Ahmed Hafnaoui won gold after being the least favored competitor going into the race.

Suni Lee of the United States wowed the world when she took home the gold in the all-around gymnastics final, and weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz of the Philippines won big after bringing home the first-ever Olympic Gold for her country.

If you want to catch the final moments of the Olympics, you can tune in to NBC or find the games on the NBC Sports app, NBCOlympics.com, and the Peacock streaming service.
