Simone Biles Social Media Post

Today, Simone Biles withdrew from the team competition during the Olympics. She shared that she withdrew because she was not in the right mental headspace and was afraid that competing in that state would lead to a nasty injury. Team USA finished the day with a silver medal and Russia got the gold.

She just broke her silence on social media. She shared a simple silver heart, seemingly referring to the team’s silver medal victory today. Simone Biles told Today’s Hoda Kotb that “Physically, I feel good, I’m in shape. Emotionally, that kind of varies on the time and moment. Coming here to the Olympics and being the head star isn’t an easy feat, so we’re just trying to take it one day at a time and we’ll see.”

As the face of gymnastics, and really Team USA, at the Tokyo Olympics, Biles had an insane level of pressure on her shoulders. Her fans on social media supported her decision to withdraw.

One person wrote, “This to me is your greatest accomplishment yet. Bigger than medals. You showed everyone that wellbeing comes first. I am so proud of you.” Meanwhile, another person said encouragingly, “What an example you set by withdrawing. It takes courage to step to the side in the face of pressure. The team got to shine. Peace and blessings.”

It’s unclear if Biles will be returning for any of the other events in the Games. There is an individual event on Thursday and so far Biles said she is now taking it “day by day.” She is teaching countless people that mental health is just as important as physical health.

Biles Candid About Mental Health

Simone Biles has an international audience, given the fact she is the best gymnast in the world. She has often used her spotlight to talk about certain issues. One of which is the importance of taking mental health seriously.

Today, she showed the world that she’s willing to put her mental health ahead of everything in her life — including an Olympic gold medal. She’s opened up about the importance of therapy and how harmful the stigma surrounding it can be for people who need help.

“One of the very first sessions, I didn’t talk at all. I just wouldn’t say anything. I was like, ‘I’m not crazy … don’t need to be here’ … thought I could figure it out on my own, but that’s sometimes not the case. And that’s not something you should feel guilty or ashamed of. Once I got over that fact, I actually enjoyed it and looked forward to going to therapy. It’s a safe space,” Biles said to Glamour recently.
