Following the first half of the game against the Greenbay Packers, officials ruled San Francisco 49ers’ cornerback Josh Norman out of Week 3 due to a chest injury. After Norman’s departure from the field, the team lost 30-28, bringing their season’s record to 2-1. The team now ranks third in the NFC Division.
According to NFL reporter, Mike Garafolo, the cornerback even began spitting up blood. As a result, Norman spent the night at the hospital so that doctors could run tests. So far, the NFL star is recovering well, but his medical team insists on playing it safe over the next few days. Fans on Twitter theorized that Norman’s injury was a result of an especially powerful stiff arm during the game.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that Norman sustained “two bruised lungs, along with tissue damage which may have caused some internal bleeding, sources say.” Despite the internal injuries, the 49ers cornerback seems optimistic that he will be able to return to the field for Week 4.
Prior to the injury, Norman was off to an impressive start in his short career with the 49ers. The 33-year-old signed on with the team just this month, starting in both games against the Philadelphia Eagles on the 19th and the Packers on the 26th. Already, Norman has racked up three tackles and a forced fumble. Even still, the cornerback was recovering from a different injury he presumably received during the team’s victory against the Eagles.
49ers Lose Valued Member of Team, Linebacker Parys Haralson
The news of cornerback Josh Norman’s injury follows the announcement of teammate Parys Haralson’s death. On Monday, September 13, the team released a statement detailing the loss of its linebackers, though a cause of death wasn’t included. In the 37-year-old’s career with the 49ers, Haralson had 295 tackles, 21.5 sacks, 4 fumble recoveries, 3 forced fumbles and 4 passes defended.
“The 49ers are heartbroken and shocked by the news of Parys’ tragic passing,” the team said in a statement. “Parys was a beloved member of our organization that lived life with an extraordinary amount of passion and joy while leaving an indelible mark on everyone he came across. We extend our condolences to Parys’ family and loved ones.”
Back before the NFL, Haralson was a two-time captain for the Tennessee Volunteers. The University of Tennessee, too, expressed their condolences.
“The Tennessee Football family is mourning the sudden loss of VFL Parys Haralson,” the team tweeted. “Haralson was a two-time captain for the Vols and finished his career 5th in program history with 21 sacks.”
