Since coming into the league as a first-round draft pick out of the University of Louisville, Lamar Jackson has taken the league by storm.
The Baltimore Ravens star quarterback is the National Football League’s reigning Most Valuable Player recipient. Jackson is having another stellar season this year and has the Ravens in the second round of the NFL playoffs. They will take on the Buffalo Bills tonight (Saturday) in a contest to determine who will move on the AFC championship game.
Lamar Jackson has drawn the praise of everyone from teammates, the media and opposing player. His ability to be a double threat as both a passer and a runner make him one of the toughest player to defend in the league.
Lamar Jackson Shares Traits With All Time Great Barry Sanders
Former Buffalo Bills great Cornelius Bennett is among those who have come away super impressed with Jackson’s ability. Though they play different positions, Bennett says Jackson’s running style and dominance is reminiscent of NFL great Barry Sanders. The Bills linebacker has seen plenty of the former Detroit Lions running back and NFL Hall-of-Famer to make the comparison.
Bennett says its Lamar Jackson’s ability to make defenders miss that reminds him of Sanders.
“I see so many times that guys are taking the big shot at him and missing him,” he says of Jackson. “It’s all right to arm tackle him and lay him down softly or whatever and not get the kill shot on him.”
The former Bills defender says like Sanders, Jackson can make defenders look foolish if they don’t attempt a proper tackle attempt.
“Because as soon as you do,” Bennett continues, “You’re going to be gasping for air. I know that personally trying to tackle Barry Sanders.”
Bennett was a first round draft pick out of the University of Alabama in 1987 and played for the Bills through 1995. He also spent time with the Atlanta Falcons and Indianapolis Colts before announcing his retirement. He was the AFC Defensive Player of the Year in 1988 and went to five Pro Bowls during his career.
Jackson had a stellar 2020 season performance with 2,757 yards and a 64.4 percent completion rate. He threw for 26 touchdowns to just nine touchdowns. His quarterback rating on the season is 99.3.
