Candace Parker Named First Female NBA 2K Cover Athlete

by Quentin Blount

WNBA superstar Candace Parker is making history once again. This time she is going down as the first-ever female basketball player to appear on the cover of the NBA 2K Franchise.

Parker is a forward that currently plays for the Chicago Sky in the Women’s National Basketball Association. Not only that, but she is one of the most popular female basketball players ever. She is also a two-time MVP and one-time Finals MVP from when she played for the Los Angeles Sparks. Oh, and she also won two national titles during her college days as a Tennessee Volunteer. It will be Parker’s face that appears on the Gamestop Exclusive edition of NBA 2K22.

Candace Parker will be joining a very exclusive group of women to grace a cover of a sports video game. Included on that list is Shawn Johnson who was on the cover of Gymnastics by Wii back in 2010. And Jelena Dokic appeared on the cover of a tennis game in the early 2000s. It’s only fitting that Parker — one of the most decorated female athletes in the world — is the next to adorn the cover of a sports video game.

She took to social media on Wednesday morning to announce how proud and humble she is to have received the honor.

“Extremely proud and humbled to be the first female cover athlete in the history of @NBA2K,” Parker announced on Twitter. “I’m honored to work with a company that’s investing in women and betting on us to succeed. I’m hopeful there will be many more badass females to follow.”

Candace Parker Grew Up Playing Video Games Like NBA 2K

Many kids grow up with hopes and dreams of becoming professional athletes. Especially the kids who grew up playing video games where they could play as their favorite players. Candace Parker was one of those kids.

“I grew up a video game fanatic. That’s what I did, to the point where my brothers would give me the fake controller when I was younger where I think I was playing and I wasn’t,” Parker told ESPN. “All I wanted to do was just be like them. As a kid growing up, you dream of having your own shoe and dream of being in a video game. Those are an athlete as a kid’s dreams. To be able to experience that, I don’t take it lightly.”

According to her, she believes that she can appreciate the honor now more than perhaps she would have as a younger player.

“I think when you’re young and experience these types of things, you’re onto the next thing,” she said. “As I’ve gotten older, I’ve really savored the moment.”

The game is currently available for pre-order.
