Hitting a Major League pitch is supposedly one of the hardest things to do in sports. Yet year after year, celebrities from all walks of life struggle to get the ceremonial first pitch ball across the plate. When UFC legend Conor McGregor stepped onto the mound at the Cubs-Twins game, everyone could breathe a sigh of relief. Finally, a professional athlete who can put this ball on a rope to the catcher. Think again, MLB fans.
Conor McGregor’s first pitch was borderline insulting to the hallowed ground of Wrigley Field. Fans were probably spitting out their beer in disbelief. And that’s saying a lot, considering cold ones go for 10 bucks a pop. At least Conor McGregor looked good in his fitted suit as he delivered one of the worst first pitches on record.
The one thing we can say for this pitch is it had plenty of power. Give McGregor credit. His ball had some juice on it. Unfortunately, all the power was directed upward and sideways. The UFC fighter absolutely sailed a moonball 15 feet over the catcher’s head. Well, 10 feet right of the catcher’s head. He nearly took a fan out in the process. The good news is the only way to go from here is up. If he ever gets another chance at a first pitch, that is.

Conor, Conor, Conor. You’re a great fighter. You’re not the best thrower we’ve ever seen. And you know what? There’s nothing wrong with that. We can’t all be good at everything. Conor McGregor has become an icon as a result of his mixed martial arts career and his whiskey brand. Not because of American sports. He’ll survive.
That being said, when someone throws a football like this, it’s hard to keep seeing them in the same light. We’ll let this one slide, though. He isn’t American, after all. For Conor McGregor, football is played with the feet. That goes a long way in helping to understand his complete disregard for the laces in the video below. The final product is something between a shot put throw and… well, judge for yourself.
