Cowboys Legend Tony Romo Makes Bold Predictions for NFL’s 2021 Season

by Quentin Blount

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has made some fascinating predictions leading up to the start of the 2021 NFL season.

Let’s make no mistake about it — Tony Romo knows a thing or two about playing quarterback in the NFL. As a matter of fact, Romo was a four-time Pro Bowler during his 14 years with the Cowboys. And that experience has translated well into the broadcast booth. After he retired in 2017, he joined up with Jim Nantz and CBS to call games for the league.

A lot has been made about Romo’s tendency to call out a play before it happens. Some fans love it, and some hate it. And some NFL coaches don’t think it’s all that impressive. But despite that, Romo’s opinions still carry some weight. He sat down for a media call on Wednesday to talk about the upcoming season and a few players who have caught his eye. One of those being New York Jets’ rookie quarterback Zach Wilson.

“I think Zach Wilson is going to be in the discussion as one of the top three to give quarterbacks [in the league] very few quickly,” Romo said. “Within the next couple of years, I think you’re going to see him rise. I think he’s unbelievable. His ceiling is so high.”

Tony Romo Thinks Zach Wilson Is the Next Patrick Mahomes

Now, there are certainly a lot of different ways to play the quarterback position in the NFL. There are some players who can sling the ball all over the field like Patrick Mahomes, there are some who are great runners like Lamar Jackson, and there are some who are extremely intelligent and possess quick decision-making ability like the GOAT Tom Brady. As for the Jets’ rookie quarterback, Romo thinks he falls into category one.

“It’s rare for me to say someone has the ability to get in the stratosphere of a Mahomes, but I think this kid actually has that ability,” Romo explained. “So when you have a quarterback like that, I think there’s no telling how good you can be. He can make up for a lot of weaknesses in a lot of areas for a football team.”

Tony Romo isn’t the only person that is high on Wilson. Just take the guy who drafted him for example. New York Jets general manager Joe Douglas believes that the rookie has all the tools to be great.

“He’s been everything we’d hoped for scouting him at BYU,” Douglas said. “Just his passion for the game, the way he soaks up information, his process, his preparation, just the way he gets ready for practices. It’s been good seeing him download this information, not making the same mistake twice.”
