A day after suffering a medical emergency at the team facilities, Dallas Cowboys strength coach, Markus Paul, passed away in the hospital. Paul collapsed due to an undisclosed medical emergency at the Cowboys practice facility in Frisco on Tuesday. Team personnel and paramedics treated him onsite before rushing him to the local hospital. Doctors pronounced him dead tonight, although the cause of death is still unknown.
The nature of the medical emergency still remains unclear. Several players and coaches were on site when the emergency happened, but media coverage was stopped. Markus Paul died in the hospital surrounded by his family. He was 54 years old.
Dallas Cowboys Remember Markus Paul
Markus Paul worked with the Cowboys for the past three years. He joined the team after 19 years in the league, a life long career of success. As a strength and conditioning coach in the NFL, Paul helped his teams to five Super Bowls, three with the New England Patriots and two with the New York Giants. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones released a statement about Markus Paul after his death.
“The loss of a family member is a tragedy, and Markus Paul was a loved and valued member of our family,” Jones said. “He was a pleasant and calming influence in our strength room and throughout The Star. His passion for his work and his enthusiasm for life earned him great respect and admiration from all of our players and the entire organization. We offer our love and support to his family in this very difficult time. Our hearts are broken for his family and all of the individuals whose lives he touched and made better.”
Mike McCarthy added his own sentiments later on. “Markus Paul was a leader in this building,” McCarthy said. “He earned the players respect and attention because he cared so much and was a naturally gifted communicator — both on the personal and professional levels. He handled every situation, sometimes with a smile and a pat on the back, and sometimes with tough love.”
The Dallas Cowboys will have to suit up against the Washington Football Team this Thanksgiving Thursday without the help of their beloved strength coach. Markus Paul dedicated his life to his work, and every team he worked with benefited from it. The Cowboys will honor him tomorrow before the game.
