Danny Earnhardt Sr., Dale Sr.’s Brother and Longtime JR Motorsports Mechanic, Dies at 66

Sad news from the NASCAR world. Danny Earnhardt Sr., youngest brother of Dale Sr., has passed away at the age of 66.

Earnhardt was a longtime member of JR Motorsports. He had been with the team since 2005. JR Motorsports released a statement detailing the passing of their employee and friend.

“Earnhardt Sr. worked in the suspension room at JR Motorsports, building the cars that won 58 races and three NASCAR Xfinity Series championships. He was 66. …Earnhardt Sr., father of current JRM car chief Danny Earnhardt Jr., was a longtime employee of JRM, coming in 2005 upon the company’s entry in NXS competition and was a vital part of the success the team has had since.”

Danny was the youngest child of Ralph and Martha Earnhardt. Of course, he was raised in Kannapolis, North Carolina. He had two older sisters, Kaye and Cathy. Also, he had two older brothers, Dale Sr., and Randy. His father was a dirt track legend and his brother was a NASCAR legend as well.

During his life, he would work on his father’s cars. Following his father’s death, he moved on to work for his brother’s team. He could do just about anything and was a “jack-of-all-trades.” Danny prepared cars, was a tire carrier in the pit crew, and more. He was even there when his nephew Dale Jr. started his own career.

It was during his time with Dalr Jr. that the driver would win two Xfinity championships. Then it was the Busch Series. He would move on up to the Cup Series with his nephew and worked for the team for years.

NASCAR Releases a Statement

Shortly following the announcement that Danny Earnhardt Sr. had passed, NASCAR released a statement. Not only is he part of the royal family of the sport, but he was also a working man and important to the sport in his own way.

“The Earnhardt family holds a special place in NASCAR history and Danny Earnhardt was an important part of their success. Danny worked hard behind the scenes, helping three generations of Earnhardts succeed. On behalf of the entire NASCAR industry, our thoughts are with the Earnhardt family during this difficult time.”

Of course, Danny senior’s son talked about the passing of his father. While he was a man behind-the-scenes most of his career, his family got to see the full picture His son described him as a hard worker and someone that inspired him and so many others every day that he went to work.

Danny Earnhardt Sr. will be missed by his family and JR Motorsports team. His passing also reminds fans of his older brother and brings all those somber memories back to the forefront. As one of the princes of NASCAR, he will be dearly missed.
