Before his Sunday Night Football matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, Arizona Cardinals star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins was seen driving his black Ferrari through a caravan of Trump supporters and flipping them off.
An unofficial miles-long caravan in support of President Donald Trump drove around the Phoenix, AZ area on Sunday. Hundreds of vehicles drove down Arizona highways in a parade-style display leading up to the November presidential election.
Multiple people riding in the Trump caravan captured photos of Hopkins speeding in and out of lanes holding up his middle fingers to the crowd. Additionally, many of the Trump supporters said the Pro-Bowler drove recklessly and could have endangered drivers in the caravan.
Richard Williams, a Trump supporter in the caravan, posted a photo he took of the incident on Twitter. Williams was angry at Hopkins for endangering the caravan, including his 8-year-old son.
“@DeAndreHopkins My 8 yr old son was in one of the cars you were swerving in and out of as you were disrupting the PHX Trump Train drive and trying to cause an accident. You’re a piece of trash. Make your political statements, but you (put) people at risk today,” his post read while tagging ESPN and the Arizona Cardinals organization.
Hopkins “Scared” Some of the Riders in the Caravan
AZ Central spoke to a couple who took part in the Trump caravan. Tony and April Garcia said they noticed Hopkins’ Ferrari weaving through lanes between the caravan’s hundreds of vehicles. The couple saw the Ferrari exit the freeway near State Farm Stadium and realized the man was likely a player for the Cardinals. In fact, Tony Garcia said he was able to confirm that it was indeed Hopkins when he found a picture online of the player wearing the same shirt the Ferrari driver wore.
“It’s scary when they are coming up fast and swerving into you,” April Garcia explained. In addition, she said other “intolerant” people opposed to President Trump threw water and other objects directed at the caravan.
During recent Sundays in the Phoenix area, Trump supporters have gathered to drive in caravans that last hours. Typically, the caravan begins around Lake Pleasant and ends with afterparties in Morristown. There seems to be some questions as to the legality of the caravans.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety is supposed to make a statement on Monday concerning the caravans. DPS is looking into whether the hundreds of cars that drive below the speed limit on highways is breaking any laws.
The Arizona Cardinals organization has not made a statement on the allegations directed towards Hopkins. The player himself has not commented on the incident either so far.
The controversy did not effect Hopkins’ play on Sunday night. The wide receiver had a nagging ankle injury, but finished the game with 10 receptions, 103 receiving yards, and a touchdown. Hopkins was a big part of the Cardinals’ 37-34 comeback victory against the previously undefeated Seahawks.
