Last week, reports came out about an intruder breaking into NBA star DeMar DeRozan’s Los Angeles home back in November.
According to law enforcement, his 7-year-old daughter has been called a hero for her actions during the break-in. She is the one who originally saw the home intruder and immediately screamed for help. Her quick thinking is what led to the man’s eventual arrest.
Police said video surveillance from DeRozan’s home showed the suspect snooping around their home. The intruder has been identified as 22-year-old Justin Berquist. Cameras captured Berquist creeping around outside their home looking through windows on Nov. 19 about 7 p.m.
Supposedly, the video catches Bergquist entering the DeRozan household through a sliding glass door. Additionally, a shirtless Berquist spent 17 minutes inside the home until he ran into DeRozan’s daughter, according to police.
“When the suspect saw [DeMar’s daughter], he put his finger to his lips and signaled for her to be quiet,” the police report stated.
However, the 7-year-old wisely did not listen. Instead, she ran downstairs while screaming for her parents.
The 6’6″, 220-pound DeRozan heard the commotion and his daughter’s screams. He quickly took action, running towards the disturbance as he proceeded to “chase the man out of his house.”
Subsequently, Berquist ran from the house and away from the area. Yet, he returned shortly after to the San Antonio Spurs player’s gated community, according to police. Berquist tried to re-enter DeRozan’s neighborhood, but community security guards stopped him during his second attempt. In addition, security called the police who took Berquist in for questioning.
DeRozan and his wife claim that Bergquist damaged one of the home’s sliding glass doors. They said they’ve been quoted $15,000 in total costs to repair the door.
Intruder Says He Meant To Break Into Kylie Jenner’s Home
Following Berquist’s arrest, more details on his true motives came out. The 22-year-old said he mistook DeRozan’s home for another celebrity’s house. Berquist admitted to law enforcement that he was indeed trying to break into celebrity Kylie Jenner’s home instead.
Police arrested and officially charged Berquist with one count of felony burglary. Furthermore, officials confirmed that a restraining order is now in place, which prohibits Berquist from coming anywhere close to DeRozan or Jenner’s homes.
As for the DeRozan family, the four-time NBA All-Star said that “everything is good” following the home intrusion. He said his family is doing well after the scary incident. DeRozan downplayed the break-in when speaking with reporters recently. He said growing up in rough neighborhoods he’s been through worse.
“Yea, everything is good. I grew up in Compton, California. I’ve been through worse,” DeRozan said with a smile.
