Demaryius Thomas, Former Broncos WR, Dies at 33: Reports

Former Georgia Tech and NFL wide receiver Demaryius Thomas has passed away at the age of 33.

Fans will remember the receiver for his exploits on the field. Coming out of high school, the talented athlete had proven himself to be a division one talent. Coming out of Dexter, Georgia, he was a three-sport star and excelled in basketball, football, and track and field.

The news of his death was first reported by Miles Garrett of Fox5 Sports in Atlanta.

“I just emailed Demaryius Thomas position coach while he was at West Laurens High School – Jeff Clayton,” Garrett’s tweet says. “He tells me that the rumors are true. The former Georgia Tech and Broncos receiver has passed away at the age of 33.”

Thomas Worked Hard to Become a Top Receiver

Thomas would accept a scholarship offer from Georgia Tech and started his career as a Yellow Jacket in 2006. In the very first game he played, his team took down Notre Dame 33-3. From there, it was nothing but up for the football star. While he was a talented receiver throughout college, his fourth year really solidified him as one of the best talents in the 2010 draft.

Drafted by the Denver Broncos in the first round of the 2010 draft, Thomas didn’t wait long to hear his name called. He was taken with the 22nd overall pick in the draft. Denver would be his new home for the next eight years. After moving on from the Broncos in 2018, he bounced around a few teams before retiring officially earlier this summer.

Demaryius Thomas, affectionately referred to as “DT” by fans and teammates alike, was a talent on the field. He would win the 2015 Super Bowl as part of that Broncos team. He earned five Pro Bowl selections and was twice named Second-Team All-Pro.

Demaryius Thomas Overcame Struggles in Life

The story of Demaryius Thomas before he became a football star was rough. He was born on Christmas Day in 1987. While he was growing up, his mother and grandmother were arrested and put in prison for narcotics. So, Thomas grew up with his aunt and uncle.

President Barack Obama would commute the sentences of his mother and grandmother in 2015 and 2016 respectively. Throughout his life, Thomas found solace in his faith. The receiver famously posted about his Christian faith on social media. He also had a tattoo of Jesus along with “Jesus Saves” tattooed under it on his left arm.

Demaryius Thomas inspired many with his play and his faith. His life was spent perfecting his craft and he rose to the top of his field. Super Bowl champion, man of faith, a son, and a life gone too soon. Rest in peace to the former Broncos receiver.
