According to ESPN reporter Ed Werder, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees is likely to miss some time after suffering multiple rib fractures and a collapsed lung.

“Drew Brees has multiple rib fractures on both sides of his chest and a collapsed lung on the right side, per @WerderEdESPN,” the official SportsCenter account wrote on Twitter.

Brees, the Saints starter, had a shoulder injury coming into the game, but he played the entire first half and completed eight of his 13 passes for 76 yards and a touchdown. However, late in the second quarter, he took a big hit from 49ers defensive lineman Kentavius Street. The hit resulted in a flag for roughing the passer. Street was charged with landing with his full body weight on Brees.

Brees got up favoring his right shoulder/rib area. Still, he remained in for the rest of the half and threw a touchdown pass to running back Alvin Kamara.

Backup quarterback Jameis Winston came in and finished out the game. Brees, meanwhile, began the second half standing on the sidelines with his helmet on, so he could still return if Winston were to struggle. He ultimately wasn’t needed, though, as the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB finished the game 6 of 10 passing for 63 yards and led the Saints to victory in the second half. They won 27-13.

Saints Fans Sound Off on Drew Brees Injury

Many NFL fans took to Twitter to send Brees well wishes on his road to recovery. However, other fans took a second to poke fun at the situation.

One Saints fan had the realization that this could be the end for Brees’ career. He has been in the NFL for 19 seasons is likely a first-ballot Hall of Famer.

“S— poor guy might go out like this,” the fan said earlier today.

Other fans expressed frustration, disappointment, and surprise to hearing the news.

“Nooooooo.””Yikes,” and “Omg,” were just a few of many similar reactions on Twitter.

Earlier this season, Los Angeles Chargers team doctors accidentally punctured the lung of their starting QB at the time, Tyrod Taylor. A fan on Twitter joked that maybe that could be what happened to Brees. The user references the incident, attempting to joke at a connection between the two.

Another fan tweeted in light of Jameis Winston’s propensity to throw interceptions. The former Buccaneer became the first player in NFL history to throw for 30 or more touchdowns and 30 or more interceptions in the same season last year with Tampa Bay.

“Winston ready to throw 4 Tds and 3 INTs next week,” the user wrote.

The Saints currently hold first place in the NFC South and are sitting at 7-2. They will face the Atlanta Falcons in Week 11.
