Florida Gators men’s basketball player Keyontae Johnson is in a medically induced coma. After Johnson collapsed on the court in a game on Saturday against Florida State University. On Monday, his grandfather reports that he is now in the hospital.

After Johnson collapsed, he was first treated in Tallahassee, Florida. Keyontae Johnson’s grandfather, Larry DeJarnett, says that his grandson was then moved to the Gainesville hospital.

Johnson’s grandfather said further that the hospital is hoping to bring the basketball player out of the coma today (Dec. 14). All that is left for those following the situation is to hope that the induced coma helps stabilize Johnson.

However, there is no certainty in the status of Johnson. Dejarnett, in an interview with USA TODAY Sports, says that doctors aren’t positive about the outcome.

“They’re just not sure. He may have had activity in the brain, so they induced the coma. They put him on medication to keep him sedated.”

Keyontae Johnson and Covid-19

Additionally, Johnson’s grandfather says that he isn’t certain as to whether or not Keyontae had Covid-19. In that terrifying instance, it is unclear if the virus could have compromised his immune system. But again, it isn’t known whether he tested positive or negative for the virus.

“I know that there were some of the times when some of the team was quarantined, yes. I don’t know if he was one of them or not.”

Keyontae Johnson was named the SEC’s preseason player of the season. So, at the very least, he was an exceptionally promising basketball star. Hopefully, he can make a full recovery and return to playing as soon as he can.

During the incident, the FSU head coach says that his team dealt with overwhelming emotions. “Several guys were crying uncontrollably.”

However, despite the collapse in the first half, the teams finished the game. The FSU Seminoles went on to win the game 83-71.

The teams finished the game, which the Seminoles won 83-71.
