The Steelers and Browns have a long history, but that doesn’t matter much to Pittsburgh. Another former Steeler has stepped forward to disrespect the Browns ahead of their playoff game today. This time, cornerback Ike Taylor told slammed the team.
“Well, first of all, there is no rivalry,” Taylor said, via TMZ Sports. “You know, the only rivalry when it comes down to Pittsburgh is the Baltimore Ravens. That’s the only rivalry we look at.”
Taylor continued by saying, “We never looked at Cleveland, we never looked at Cincinnati as no rivalry. That’s just how it was.”
His comments follow a shot from Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster that the Browns were just “nameless, gray faces.”
Ike Taylor said his remark wasn’t meant as a diss, but it’s hard to believe that considering the teams’ history and animosity. However, Taylor said it’s just the Steeler way.
“It’s not in a disrespectful way,” Taylor said. “It’s just if you’re a Pittsburgh Steeler, that’s how you look at other teams.”
The Steelers and Browns face off tonight at 8 p.m. EST in the AFC Wildcard game. It will be their third meeting this season. They split the games, though Pittsburgh sat most of their starters in the final meeting.
JuJu Smith-Schuster likely doesn’t remember the earlier match-ups. He says all the Cleveland games and players run together.
“I think they’re still the same Browns teams I play every year,” Smith-Schuster said. “I think they’re nameless gray faces. They have a couple good players on their team, but at the end of the day, I don’t know. The Browns is the Browns. I’m just happy we’re playing them again Sunday.”
Smith-Schuster had promised to stop giving opposing teams bulletin board material before the games. Only time will tell if these comments will have the same impact as his dancing on opposing logos and posting the videos to TikTok.
