On Sunday (Nov. 22), the Green Bay Packers lost to the Indianapolis Colts in a thrilling overtime game. Packers’ Marquez Valdes-Scantling lost a fumble in overtime to seal the win for the Colts. After the game, he took to Twitter to share that he was receiving death threats from angry Packers fans.
While tied at 31 all in overtime, Aaron Rodgers threw left to Valdes-Scantling on the thirty-yard line. He made a football move to try and get the first down but the Colts’ Jalen Collins knocked the ball free.
The Colts recovered the ball and Rodrigo Blankenship kicked the field goal for the win.
Even though it is common knowledge that Packers fans are die-hard, getting death threats after losing a fumble in overtime is clearly too far.
Valdes-Scantling says that he can’t believe the audacity of fans after a loss.
“Death threats over a football game? Jesus you people need help. It’s actually sick. I’m good. My team got my back.”
Valdes-Scantling Deals With Death Threats
Often times, fans overreact to tough losses. It is unfortunately all too common for players who make a mistake leading to a loss to receive death threats. Worst of all, it happens across all sports. Valdes-Scantling is simply the latest player to get death threats in a long line of them.
For example, in January the Chicago Bears lost a playoff game due to the famous “double doink” kick from Cody Parkey. Even though it was rotten luck that his kick hit two of the field goal posts, he still got death threats. Consequently, Parkey was essentially exiled from Chicago.
However, this game was not nearly as important and certainly fans will come back around.
That said though, not all Packers fans are pleased with the death threats Valdes-Scantling received. One fan expressed their disappointment with the fan base in response to the tweet.
Fans let their emotions get the worst of them sometimes, but others will stand up for their players regardless. Poking fun at players is far more acceptable.
Valdes-Scantling was second on the packers in total receiving yards. He hauled in three catches on six targets for 55 total yards. One play in particular towards the end of regulation was massive. With time winding down, Valdes-Scantling made a remarkable 47-yard catch to bring the packers to mid-field. Shortly thereafter, Rodgers and the Packers scored the game-tying field goal.
