Joe Rogan Explains Why Conor McGregor Should Fight Legendary UFC Fighter Instead of Dustin Poirier

On Friday, podcaster, comedian, and UFC commentator Joe Rogan shared his thoughts on who MMA star Conor “Notorious” McGregor should fight next following his recent loss.

During episode #1603 of the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, the commentator spoke out on the Irishman’s loss to Dustin Poirier. McGregor returned to the ring on Jan. 23 for the first time in a year. A victory over Poirier at UFC 257 would have likely guaranteed McGregor a shot at the lightweight title.

However, Poirier’s second-round TKO shut down any thoughts of a title fight. Now, McGregor will have to look elsewhere for his next fight.

Many fans want to see a trilogy fight between Poirier and McGregor. The fighters have TKO’d one another once each, so the third fight would be a perfect deciding bout. Yet Rogan shared a different opinion on who McGregor and Poirier should fight next.

During the podcast, Rogan said he thought MMA purists would want to see Poirier fight No. 3 ranked Charles Oliveira. In addition, he said that “Notorious” could choose to fight No. 4 ranked Michael Chandler next.

But the UFC commentator is opting for a different trilogy fight for McGregor. Rogan thinks that a third fight between McGregor and Nate Diaz would be “an excellent option.”

“Well, Conor McGregor vs. Nate Diaz is an excellent option. It’s an excellent option because that doesn’t offend anyone, give him some time off. It doesn’t offend anyone and Nate is not the kind of kicker that Dustin is, he’s much more of a boxer. It falls into Conor’s wheelhouse more and Nate is also insanely durable, and Nate also has a finish over Conor. Conor does not have a finish over Nate,” Rogan explained during JRE #1603.

Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz Trilogy Fight Supported by Shaquille O’Neal

Joe Rogan isn’t the only celebrity who wants to see a Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz trilogy fight. On Thursday, legendary NBA big man Shaquille O’Neal said that the two fighters should go at it for a third time.

McGregor and Diaz each have one win against the other. In 2016, Diaz won their first fight by submission. Later that same year, McGregor got revenge by judge’s decision in a fight that went all five rounds.

When speaking with ESPN MMA, O’Neal said he thinks that McGregor and Poirier should indeed fight again. But if he’s choosing who’s up next, Shaq wants the Irishman to fight Nate Diaz who he called his “brother.”

“I would like to see Conor fight my guy Nate Diaz,” O’Neal stated.

The 4-time NBA champion called Conor McGregor a “legend” and said “you win some, you lose some” when speaking about his loss to Poirier.

“Conor’s a legend. I’m not going to disrespect him. You win some, you lose some, but my guy from Lafayette, Louisiana, he’s also a tough guy, and it was a great matchup. I’m not one of these guys, ‘he did this, he did that.’ I have no idea what it takes to be a champion like that, but I know that Conor has earned everyone respect and look, you win some, you lose some.”
