Believe it or not, Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James plans on trading in the iconic No. 23 for No.6 next season. ESPN clarified he’s not changing numbers to pass his old one to Anthony Davis as he intended to do a few years ago.

Originally, James sported the No. 6 while he played for Team USA during worldwide competitions. Later on, he wore it when he was with the Miami Heat for four seasons. Mostly, because the organization retired Michael Jordan’s No. 23 (Jordan never even played for Miami) as a tribute to his career.

Look for James this 2021-22 NBA season wearing his new No. 6 jersey on the court. A team source told ESPN, Davis will remain No.3. In his inaugural season, he wore the number with purple and gold when L.A. won the championship.

During the summer of 2019, James had planned on switching back to No. 6. Davis had adorned No. 23 throughout his entire career with New Orleans, before joining the Lakers. However, a source told ESPN, Nike decided against them changing numbers due to a massive waste of inventory.

Fans know James was influenced by Jordan when he chose No. 23. Later on, he admitted that No. 6 inspired him through NBA greats Bill Russell and Julius “Dr. J” Erving, who both wore the number.

Since leaving the Heat in 2014, James continued to wear No. 6 on his practice uniform while playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers and in L.A. He was able to pull off both numbers thanks to former NFL player Deion Sanders. He wore his collegiate No. 2 for practice, and then played in No. 21 for a majority of his career.
