One of boxing’s greatest legends, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, has died at the age of 66 in his home in New Hampshire.

The news was announced in a post made by his wife, Kay Hagler. In the post, Kay Hagler doesn’t reveal a cause of death but does say it was unexpected.

“I am sorry to make a very sad announcement,” Kay Hagler wrote. “Today unfortunately my beloved husband Marvelous Marvin passed away unexpectedly at his home here in New Hampshire. Our family requests that you respect our privacy during this difficult time.”

For seven years, Marvelous Marvin Hagler was the undisputed middleweight champion. With 12 title defenses from 1980 to 1987, it ranks as the third-longest reign of the undisputed era. Additionally, Hagler still possesses the best knockout percentage of all undisputed middleweight champs, with 78 percent.

For those unaware, Marvelous Marvin Hagler was his legal name. Born Marvin Nathaniel Hagler, the legendary boxer had it changed to Marvelous Marvin Hagler in order to force announcers to say “Marvelous” when announcing his entrance.

A famous southpaw that was only made even more memorable and legendary due to his desire to be called by his nickname.

Potential Cause of Death

In a post made by fellow iconic boxer Thomas Hearns, he asked for prayers for his friend Marvelous Marvin.

The post, which was made an hour before Kay Hagler’s announcement, reads:

“A real true warrior Pray for the king and his family.. he’s in ICU fighting the after effects of the vaccine! He’ll be just fine but we could use the positive energy and Prayer for his Full Recovery !”

His comment somewhat contradicts what Kay Hagler said, specifically that he was in his home when he died. There’s no confirmation on whether effects of a COVID-19 vaccine was what killed him.
