Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford has made it clear he wants out of Detroit. And his wife, Kelly Stafford, is taking that decision hard, saying she cries whenever she thinks of leaving the city.
The Detroit Free Press said the team’s 2009 No. 1 draft pick hasn’t spoken publicly about the trade. But he approached the team quietly recently to make his demands clear.
Kelly Stafford posted her thoughts about a potential move on Instagram.
“Thank you,” she wrote. “This place, our home, the people… it’s hard to find the words to explain what this place means to me. Random tears come very often when I think about not being here. This place supported me during the toughest time of my life and during the happiest times and I want to thank y’all in the right way.
Whenever I figure out what the future holds, you’ll be hearing from me again with a thank you that hopefully shows how much gratitude and love I have for this place.. but until then we are going to enjoy our time left in Michigan to the fullest because there really is no other place like it.”
The Lions finished at the bottom of the NFC North this season with a 5-11 record. Matt Stafford, who turns 33 next month, has played well despite the team’s poor performance. The Detroit Free Press believes several playoff caliber teams — including the Colts, 49ers, and Washington — will consider trading for the veteran in the offseason.
Kelly Stafford Calls Out ‘Replaceable’ Players
Houston Texans’ star defensive end JJ Watt said after a loss earlier this season that as athletes they are paid to show up week after week and perform at a certain level. And he called out teammates and other players that he felt weren’t living up to that agreement, saying that they “shouldn’t be here.”
“We’re professional athletes getting paid a whole lot of money,” a clearly frustrated Watt says. “If you can’t come in and put work in in the building, go out to the practice field and work hard, do your lifts and do what you’re supposed to do, you should not be here. This is a job. …”
Kelly Stafford later posted comments to the video for an Instagram story. ESPN’s Michael Rothstein captured a screenshot of the story.
“Finally someone said it. If you don’t wanna do it… don’t worry, someone else will replace you real quick.”
It was just one of several controversies Kelly Stafford created on social media this season.
